As a (fake) writer I kinda hate that policy to be honest. I’ve used GPT to get out of writers block, give me ideas for where to take something, and improve sentences. It’s a tool that “writers” will be expected to know how to use the same way a word processor is in the near future. And as a tool, it’s super helpful! Teaching people how to use a tool vs not teach them and they get the idea it’s banned cause it could do the work for them is not a good trade off imo. Augment, not replace. The next tweet is banning Grammarly? That’s getting weird. Literally everything I’ve written in the last 8? years has gone through Grammarly before publication.

My brother uses GPT as a jumping off point for his work as an attorney. Doing case write ups and the like

I think for classes, banning chatgpt has merit. learn the basics and then once you're ready, chatgpt could have some value. Use it too early and it could become a crutch.

I think it has some worth for content ideation, but that's about it.

As the one who is left to enforce our institutional honor code, ChatGPT is a nightmare. Yes, plenty of useful purposes but at the high-school level and below, there is way too much value in developing the skills - including idea generation - on your own.

i love the point in the policy that it’s impossible to appropriately attribute since the content is scraped from throughout the internet and there’s no way to know who initially created it.

Well yeah, but I’m talking about my own experience of working in a high school.

The more I think about it, the more I think it’s appropriate for educational settings as a whole. If it were around when I was in college, holy shit I would have cheated the hell out of my research papers, from thesis generation to talking points to who knows what else.

I had to deal with 3 kids using AI to write entire essays last week. With 160 students’ essays to grade, I had to spend 10 minutes on each of those figuring out how to “prove” they were using AI. It’s a high school teacher’s nightmare.

I hate the idea that it’s a writing “tool.” If you’re not coming up with the ideas then how is it writing? If I ask AI to write me an outline for an essay, I’m not doing the intellectual work of creating my own argument and figuring out how to organize my ideas in a logical manner. In an academic setting, that MATTERS. This is just another example of capitalist brain rot, where efficiency matters more than humanity.

Use AI if you want as an adult, whatever. But in education the thinking is the point, not the end product. Maybe that makes me a Luddite but I’m ok with it

What are the obvious giveaways that ChatGPT was used? Or is it usually more subtle?

Speaking of generative AI usage, a comics cover artist (with a history of doing swipes of other artists’ poses) was caught having used AI on a recently revealed cover.

Comics is an industry with nonstop tough deadlines and awful pay, but it’s wild to me no one caught the doubled bottom of the “S” on Superman’s chest.

the most obvious is when it isn’t the student’s “voice”. After working with kids all year, a teacher tends to have an idea of their writing style and ability. The AI use that I tend to deal with is when a kid “writes” better than I do. In history essays, it’s also easier because it won’t have citations, have incorrect citations, or cite resources that a high school kid wouldn’t have access to or ever would consider using.

Yeah it’s kind of funny to see a kids answers all year without AI and then all of a sudden they provide something way outside their abilities out of nowhere lol
