I will 100% say that while wine and liquor is diminishing returns once you go above the $60 per pour / per glass range. That $60 is definitely leagues better and way more well rounded than the $30-$40 range which itself is way better than the $10-$20 range.

It legitimately does make a big ass flavor difference if you have the money to ball out and get something high end, this job has proven to me it’s not just a placebo effect

Dude that’s not even close to our high end cognacs either lmao. That’s the lowest of the 3 Gran Marnier’s we have (the Centennaire. We don’t have standard Gran Marnier)

but I work at the kind of place where even our rail liquor i hadnt even heard of before except for the Mi Campo tequila and Montelobos mezcal

we don’t really stock mainstream shit at all which I actually like. But our base pours are $16-$18 (pretty standard for fine dining). The $60 stuff is in the actual spirits book for people seeking out high end liquor. Which to be fair, only like 3% of customers actually ask for. Much easier to sell $200+ bottles of wine to tables who are just there to celebrate and okay with spending outside their normal range, than a $75 glass of whiskey

 

If I had money to just throw away I would do it once in awhile

but playing heavily into that is me not being a person who likes to binge drink. If I’m doing that, just the one drink is probably plenty for me.


an elite liquor or an elite glass of wine is such a different experience though. we have La Carriere Chardonnay from Peter Michael available by the glass (one of the best Sonoma County single-vineyard producers)… it’s a $60 glass of wine. But you take one little sip and the flavor lasts for like 3 minutes in your mouth and transforms into different flavors as it works it’s way through your palette. And then you take a bite of food and the next sip tastes different again. It’s fuckin wild I love wine
