They make enough money with tour in order to not to have a boss / not to have to request time off from anybody. That's very successful. They are able to freelance as musicians or working with music instruments or giving lessons, which is very normal for a person in a band to do for money on the side - but that's still freelancing a career in music as opposed to having a "job" that isn't music related. This is how I define success. You can't make a living off music this way unless your tours are bringing in a good deal more than they cost.
