Again, that’s a budget issue. It is possible (and happens all the time) that DIY bands make better margins because they’re investing far more shrewdly and efficiently in the first place

just because you can’t imagine it doesnt make it untrue. I sold 60 tickets myself in person to people I know in Baltimore for my last show. That’s a small fraction of the number of people I’ve met and still keep up with because of music stuff.

Do you know what “better margins” means

cause if not then you should not be discussing making or losing money. It’s not about revenue. It’s about scaling your expenses to where they make sense with your revenue. The big problem in the music industry is that larger tours create unrealistic expense barriers for bands to surpass. Especially in LiveNation / Ticketmaster venues with more middlemen mouths to feed. And I do include indie label bands in that.

you could settle this argument real quickly by looking at the lineup of The Fest and comparing how many bands were locals a decade ago and how many they're having to call for reunion shows/fly in dates now. the well ran dry.

 

Yes, I do thank you lol. These musicians still return home to day jobs. They do not live off music entirely.
