This is what worries me. I'm glad to hear Serkis will be back to play (or at least voice) Gollum. But Viggo as Aragorn is perfect casting, and it's tough to see anyone else stepping into the ranger's boots.

 

And even having said that, Middle Earth is the last property I want to see converted into a cinematic universe. But it seems we're starting down that path, whether it's warranted or not. The least they could do is refrain from inventing stories beyond the scope of what Tolkien published. With books like Beren and Luthien and Children of Hurin out there, why not simply adapt those before trying to imagine what Gandalf and Aragorn got up to?

 

I totally understand what you are saying, only I would say we already had Middle Earth turned into a cinematic universe with Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. Legolas fistfighting Bolg in Laketown is way more PJ's Middle Earth Cinematic Universe than it is anything even remotely close to The Hobbit.

As much as I wish he could be a main actor in the film it just wouldn’t work. Aragorn has to look visibly younger than Viggo is right now. Perhaps they can add a scene that takes place post-ROTK with an older King Aragorn and have Viggo cameo in that scene.

 

I like to think some producer sat and watched this and went "wow this was good and popular maybe we should make this!"

It’s not just his face but his body as well. They’d have to practically CGI a different body for Viggo for a pre-Fellowship Aragorn.

i live right between two AMC’s, and had the choice of an empty theater or one of the last seats in a full one. we’ll see if i made the right choice in 3.5 hours.
