Could have sworn it was due to China's stagnant economy thanks to inefficient central planning under Mao, devastating impacts from the Cultural Revolution, outdated agricultural practices, isolation from global trade and technology, and political instability.

Only after Mao died could China do what it needed to (Deng and other leaders saw the need to shift away from strict socialist policies and the planned economy towards more market-oriented reforms to stimulate growth, increase productivity, attract foreign investment, and modernize the economy), not because it was threatened to do so.
