Part of this era's sexlessness in movies is definitely contributed to by the fact that a glamorous actress can no longer ask suggestively for someone to light her cigarette.

 

I disagree. I smoked from the age of 16 til about 28 and haven't smoked a cigarette (or really even wanted one) since (I'm 40 now). Every now and then I'll get a whiff of one and it will smell good and make me want one for a brief second, but 99% of the time, they smell awful.

 

Oh my god i almost threw up in my mouth a bit. They wouldn't know, 305s are a FL only brand. Back in the day there was an urban myth that 305s were made in a factory at the Miami-Dade county jail, and that is why they are so bad. The grossest cig I ever had.

When I was dead broke I had to resort to smoking 305 cigarillos.

 

My mother switched from Marlboro to 305's for a long time because of the rising taxes and it was really hard to be in a car or an elevator with her.

 

I’ve never smoked, but my friend used to smoke Djarum Blacks. They smelled so good. But he would always say “Gotta quit these. They’re tearing a hole in my lung.” Not sure about the veracity of that statement, but he did quit.

I ended up smoking Lucky Strikes when they brought them back a couple years ago because I wanted to feel like Donald Draper

I only ever smoke cigs when I’m in inpatient rehab facilities as a way to kill time and talk to people. It’s funny too because I’m the only person at those places that doesn’t actually smoke and nurses and doctors are always shocked when they ask if I smoke and I say no.


I’m sitting there detoxing from an IV fentanyl addiction but I’m literally like “ew of course I don’t smoke that shit will kill you”

As someone who grew up having to smell cigarettes in restaurants, I find it repulsive. We would feel forced to sit in smoking sections if they were busy and non smoking sections were packed. Hate it so much. Legitimately don’t know how anyone puts up with it. Gross as shit. And the fact that I lost a younger brother to cancer, smoking always felt way worse due to the potential for cancer. Just fucked up.

However, there was a time I smoked when I drank heavily. Would bum them off other people. I am a hypocrite. Alcohol made me do lots of dumb shit, even smoke. Just dumb as hell.

 

The most staggering example I can think of recently is Max Greenfield in Promising Young Woman.
