I just saw this in theaters and am not sure how I feel about it. From an audio-visual standpoint it's one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Every frame is breathtaking. The story and characters really suck though. I haven't read the book in a few years (and don't like it too much tbh) but it really seems unadaptable to me. Too much of the book is made up of internal monologues and the characters fall flat without them. Not that the writers should've included them. The characters' actions don't make sense with the information we're given which makes the plot almost nonsensical at times. Because of this, the moments that are supposed to carry emotional weight feel hollow to me.

I think the team made the best adaptation possible, but it was an impossible task.

First time I watched it I had some issues with it because I was letting the changes from the book distract me. But I saw it a second time (in IMAX now) and I absolutely saw Villenueve’s direction and intentions with what Zendaya’s Chani was supposed to represent and I came away thinking of it as a nearly perfect sci-fi film, one of the very best.

As much as I love the movie, I would agree that most of the characters are pretty flat. Everyones just kind of moody and whispery. Would've been nice to see Paul start a little more childlike/optimistic/smile a couple times to make his transition to genocidal jihadist a little gnarlier.

but I also don't care that much. I came to the movie to see big worms and heavy dudes and hot people with pretty eyes and it delivers

When Paul announces that he'll marry princess Irulan right in front of Chani at the end

Jessica leaning into her reverend mother role so hard

Not sure why I see so many people confused by that moment. He makes a point to tell Chani he will always love her before he does it, it's obviously a political move. I don't really know how that could be presented clearer without bashing you over the head with it.

Someone posted it in this thread already but in the book there’s stuff that happens off the page. I just assumed Denise did the same with certain things. Like the marriage proposal. Who would’ve Paul told before doing it? It could’ve been something on his mind or definitely suggested by someone. Though we don’t need to see it

Both of those examples are bad. It’s what Jessica always wanted for Paul.

Decided to just read Wikipedia’s synopsis of the rest of the series and what the fuck was this guy on after the second book lol

Yeah, maybe I just don't like the story. It's hard to put my finger on why.

Or why the Fremen even thought of having an outsider as one of their most sacred figures to begin with.

Yeah, I get that, but the movie doesn't make it obvious

I really don’t think the movies are hard to follow if you pay the bare minimum attention lol

Paul, Jessica, Chani and the Fremen are more fleshed out than in the book. The Movie flattened the space politics with the emperor which becomes easier to follow but the final battle was less impactful.
