As someone who has... let's go with not kept up on Say Anything in like a decade, is there a TL;DR (or just a longform that puts it all together) beyond "Max finally kinda lost it for good"?

I always read like, little blurbs here and there on this forum but is there a completist way to catch up on this? No offense but I'd rather read that than listen to anymore of this.

 

I will forever remember fondly a memory from high school of somehow getting one of my friends who knew every artist in the world yet had never heard of Say Anything into the band. but it took awhile.

As we drove to Taco Bell for lunch one day, “Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat” was playing and towards the end of the song he just yells out, “what the fuck is this shit? What are these lyrics?”

eventually Say Anything became his favorite band for a year or so. He was obsessed with them.

Oh poor, naive high school us. If only I could jump back to then and let him and I both know that it wasn’t really gonna get any better than that and that there would be so many more times we’d ask, “what the fuck is this shit?”

I never got super into them, my intro to them was an ex girlfriend putting "alive with the glory of love" on a mix CD for me. I liked and still like it a lot!

I'm sure a lot of them are written when manic, but I mean, people with bipolar usually have mostly normal states if they're medicated. Just a whole lot of WTH.

 

I think Sherri and Max cheer on their worst artistic impulses. Anyone willing to step in and stop Max got kicked out or left the band long ago.

 

What is there to study?

It's not like this behaviour is new for him. If you were around for the press cycle for IDTAG or his gross blog posts around IARB time it's always been the same shit. Act like a disgusting fucking asshole and then say you were being ironic. Real cool Max. The obsessive callouts and fingerpointing, gross sex lyrics, objectification and idealisation of women, difference is the music was good enough back in the day people were willing to overlook it and most of his worst impulses didn't really make it to records until after IDTAG (arguably the seeds were on that album, and before that there there's the jerking off on the phone with underage girls anthem wow i can get sexual too)

Seeing "I, VIBRATOR - SAY ANYTHING" show up in new releases really filled me with fucking dread today LOL. the lyrics are foul- although it is funny how the lyrics suggest that he can't imagine a woman being able to orgasm without a penis, or more specifically his penis being involved

weatherbox was such a great project and now we've got guest vocals from him saying "confused a dinner for a date rape" or whatever

 

Can someone please assure me Tom Delonge isn't actually on that new song and Bemis says "cosign" because he sang on one song on Hebrews where Max decided to mix his vocals & Sherri's so much higher to where you can barely even hear Tom?

Finally had time to listen to the album this morning and will just confirm that this entire thing is wildly uncomfortable and unenjoyable. I can't imagine someone finding pleasure in listening to this.

 

Of course Max is trying to claim "cosign" off of one collab. Look at how he still namedrops Kanye.

I don't know man, it's hard to summarize. Max had a couple of relapses and breakdowns, Sherri had a stint in rehab, their kids look constantly neglected and filthy, Max released a "podcast" where he admits to some pretty gross stuff, Max and Sherri repeatedly took Kickstarter money and never fulfilled orders. You can find some on Reddit if you want to dive down the rabbit hole.

 

I assure you that pleasure will not be my reason for listening, if I even bother.

 

This is an oddly specific thing I remember , but when Hebrews came out someone thought Max said “sealed in cum” on Lost My Touch and he replied something along the lines of “Oh God no”
