I don't disagree that its def not what it used identity wise as some one who went every day from 2005 until like 2017 but yeah thats dramatic.

Exactly. It changed, that's fine. But calling it Top 40 is a bit much when anyone who listens to Top 40 would struggle to name more than a few artists on the lineup.

  4. Totally missed that Friko is on this. That's a band I would have liked to see on Riot Fest, but very cool for them.

My take on the article is that the Lolla lineup's identity shift is fully tied up with festival bubble and the overall homogenization of festival lineups. There's a pipeline now: Artists do well on streaming/TikTok and then want to do the festival circuit, so their agents pitch them across the board (and I assume there's some package deal stuff going on, not just with tour packages but with agents getting all of their bands on). Those kind of packages or artists who want to play all of fests by the same promotor probably end up being a better deal for the festivals to book, which on its own would make things samey, but on top of that, a lot of more tenured artists seem to be avoiding the festivals now either because they do better money headlining their own tours (especially post-pandemic) or the festivals just aren't as exclusive and cool to play anymore. The national nature of the companies that run these also makes it harder for any given festival to have much regional identity.

Headliners are probably a slightly different calculation because, to Brad's point, those are the names that casual radio listeners need to know, and there just aren't that many of them, and those that are the right size may also do better touring on their own. Coachella seems be the only US festival willing to throw serious money at exclusive, truly huge headliners. Maybe Lolla just doesn't want to spend that kind of money.

That's a long way of saying that booking a well curated festival with a specific voice is probably really tough for a whole bunch of reasons.

Helps that Goldenvoice/AEG took a different route on their festival expansion - the Vegas genre-specific festivals and their own individual genre-specific festivals on the Coachella grounds. That allows them to be a bit more specific in their bookings across all of their properties.

Live Nation, on the other hand, simply operates many of the same festival in various cities across the country so you get a point where they're homogeneous as a result of package contracts for summer festival dates. The only two truly unique Live Nation festivals at this point are Lolla and Bonnaroo.

And then, yes, there's Riot Fest going on their own with what they book. Pitchfork still does this somewhat but this is the first year where you can really say it's not happening.

  6. I guess it just seems like Lolla isn't even a unique LN festival anymore, which I assume is what leads to the "top 40" dig in the article. I'd argue that shift was starting to happen pre-pandemic though.

I still think it gets a fair amount of unique acts. Even just looking at headliners - none overlap with Bonnaroo. Oshega always has some overlap just because it happens the same weekend.

As mentioned above, just to see two of the top 4 headliners as mentioned before it's over $200 each, assuming you don't get tickets before they sold out (looking at you SZA and Blink) and Tyler/The Killers are not cheap either. Then when you go down to some of the top-ish undercard, those acts are not cheap either to see on their own. While the lineup may not be extremely unique, it still is a good way to see a bunch of acts for less than you would if you saw them all individually.

woke up i'm in the in-between honey

Don't want to be the kpop person in the thread but... I am seriously considering going to Lolla partially because of Stray Kids, who will likely being doing an expensive, and limited, stadium tour this year, and a one day ticket to Lolla plus getting to be at Lolla is a pretty easy decision in comparison.

For two? That's not bad. Even if I go for two days I suspect single days will add up to cost more than that so I'm debating.

I have a feeling Militarie Gun is going to be a second opener for the Blink tour after the ADTR run?

I have a feeling this will not sell out, so I'll wait until it gets closer and decide if I want to go at all. It's not worth taking any time off though, that's for sure haha.

Killers v Skrillex is what I was hoping wouldn’t happen. Passing this year, I’ll catch some sets on the livestream.

Unless it’s a late night thing after one of the headliners and the got an extension for Curfew. Metallica got one in 2022 and played until 1030
