Playing with your kids is the one of the only things I have a paleo/primal guy stance towards. All primates engage in play with their kids, the vast majority of mammals do. It is instinctual.

 

Play is also a huge part of how kids process and work out their feelings, so if you want to better understand your kids, how they're feeling, what's making them anxious or upset, etc. you can get a lot of that from the scenarios they act out when playing.

Even when not playing with my kids, if possible I listen to get an idea of what they're playing and I make sure to ask each of them every day about what they played that day.

hell my 58 year old mother will still to this day play knee hockey with my 15 y/o bro. we also all play ping pong all the time together.

We did not play as kids. We were not slackers. My brother and I each got jobs at age 8 and never looked back. Children playing is what got America into this mess.

This hood piece. I struggle with this stuff because I’m pro-urbanism. I prefer to see dense mixed use building going up as opposed to suburban sprawl, but it always bums me out to see the only dense housing being built is the cheap same 5 over 1 that’s going to be horrendously overpriced and have some Live Laugh Love aesthetic restaurant or retail attached.

I know of some ideas to fix it, non-profit housing or community land trusts, tax appropriated arts funds, hiring local architects, grant funds for minority owned businesses, or even tax credits for non-franchised businesses. I rarely see all these things at once or even a scenario where developers don’t find a way to exploit them though.
