The counterpoint I'll offer, as someone who spent a few decades whitewater kayaking and running big waterfalls, etc...and knowing people who did FAR crazier shit in a kayak...some people are just wired different. Like, if he wasnt doing high spots in wrestling, he'd be doing some equally crazy in another sport (see also: climbing Everest a month after that match).

My issue with high spots/sketchy spots is "can they be done safely". Those HIAC bumps. That Darby glass bump. All the Shane from 20+ foot stuff...totally safe to do if gimmicked right. Mox has had some awesome deathmatch spots that looked awful, but were clearly safe as hell (versus the ECW versus where they didnt gimmick them). Hell, the Morrison/Dalton spot was more reckless in my mind (because it didnt even look good, and a botch 100% paralyzes the dude).

Its also not really glass, its breakway glass, which is made with sugar. Its like getting hit with a lollipop as a fan. Land on anything with vaguely sharp edges and it'll cut you from 15+ feet though. Should ahve done the spot a few feet more center though to avoid that.

  11. This guy a seat over from me was in full Sting attire. Honestly, when I first arrived he came up to me and for a split second I thought it was Sting lmao

Anyways, he had like 50+ signs ready to go. He asked the row if we’d be down to hold up signs when Sting came out. Everyone of course said yes. It was some kind of ‘Thank You Sting’ where all the signs had to be in the correct order.

Well, right before Sting came out…..I dropped my sign in-between the barricade and fencing stuff. Couldn’t get it out. Thought I ruined everything. Felt awful. Dude said no worries and just pulled out other signs and went with plan B.

  12. And the guy in the Sting outfit ended up having the best night of anyone there. After the show Sting went around and thanked everyone in the front. When he got to our area, the guy had a painting that he had done of Sting and wanted to show him. Sting asked if he could keep it. And said he was going to put it up at his house. Took a pic with the guy.

I was just glad this happened and me dropping that sign didn’t ruin his night haha

No question he'd just be doing it elsewhere. I'd still think it's dumb for a human to do in any context, but if it's not me/it's not putting unwilling participants in any danger, then, *shrug*

With the glass comment, my worry would be more about someone getting a piece in their eye.. Knowing me and how often I do just that (get random shit in my eye), I would've had a shard perfectly land right in one.

Seems like all it really accomplished in the end was taking a lot of the shine off Sting in his final match, from my vantage point

  15. The only reason it’s taking any shine from Sting is because of people complaining about it.

And if it had the opposite effect, where everyone was celebrating it, it would still have taken the shine from Sting

  17. Or maybe people can praise the spot but still recognize it was Sting’s night? Is Darby not suppose to be Darby? Sting picked him for a reason and I doubt he’d want Darby to hold back.

I don't think whether or not Sting himself personally hand selected Darby and greenlit the spot has anything to do with the broader sentiment.

For the record, the spot in of itself doesn't really bother me. I didn't find it overwhelmingly shocking or impactful for a variety of reasons, but also don't really care that they attempted this spot in the first place. I just think that if there is one thing to criticize about it, whether you hated or loved it, it's that the vast majority of people are talking about the spot and not Sting.

in the end i don't agree with this, my main takeaway from the match is the one on two towards the end and Stings table bump, but it absolutely would have taken shine off a lesser match. this one had the advantage of being the best retirement match of all time

I disagree with the take overall, but I think it's a fair enough criticism.

sorry but it's really annoying that we can like exclusively praise this show for two days and the one complaint people have is such a big deal that's just y'all bein too online about it

Also, Judgment Day/Imperium was awesome last night. Was surprised by the amount of babyface fire Finn and Priest had.

I wasn’t referring to anything said in here btw, I should’ve made that clear before.

But I suppose this also applies to me saying it about the general backlash toward it on social media. I guess I’m just surprised at the reaction to it. The constant arguing between AEW and WWE fans has kinda made me jaded toward backlash from either side and the volume of that kind of shit these days just makes it feel like ANY backlash stems from that general “pick a side” mentality so many people seem to have now.

So yes, I do see where people may have points about the spot. But I still think it’s overblown.

regardless of any and all discourse regarding sting's tag team partner in his final match, it was still the best retirement and send off for a pro wrestling legend I can think of in the US

okada and mercedes are coming to AEW, there will be new complaints forthcoming that will drown out the flavor of the past week. nobody is crying about hangman drinking swerve's blood anymore
