I'd still agree with this though although I still love Nate's vocals on that song. Those two examples though, Jim takes it.

i was gonna say first of all since when does nate sing rock music. and second of all i sincerely doubt you could write and perform jimmy eat worlds songs the way jim does. singing along to something is not the same thing as making those songs out of thin air.

Never been much of a fan of Nate's voice, prefer Jim by a very large margin

Aaron Marsh is a perfect vocalist and he doesn't have a huge amount of range or power. I can sing any Copeland song but I can't sing them like he can.

exactly range is just one aspect of the whole package of being a vocalist. writing ability, emoting, etc. all come into play.

Well I'm certainly not making a Jimmy Eat World song out of thin air.. not even sure what that means. But I'm a rock vocalist yeah, and at least a capable enough one to know where my range lies. I've sung JEW songs live before.

You seem to keep implying that someone's writing has anything to do with their vocal abilities. It doesn't. Jim's a phenomenal writer. He's a great vocalist. He's not a phenomenal vocalist.

He's a good example where tone comes into play. Jim has great tone in his lower range, and tends to lose it somewhat as he goes higher. Which isn't all that strange really.

being able to write and perform melodies is pretty important to me. also great vs phenomenal is literally splitting hairs

Bear in mind that I'd still hands down prefer Jim pushing his vocal range than never doing it at all. Their music thrives on it.

I always love Nate's tone. I love Nate's voice all the time. Except maybe the ah-ha's on Ah-Ha.

If you're a poor vocalist, that may be figuratively splitting hairs, yeah. If you're comparing two guys as in the post I was originally responding to, then in that context, Jim is definitely a great vocalist and Nate is definitely a phenomenal one.

It gets a little wild yeah and perhaps even pitchy, but the power he gets behind it is what floors me. Maybe its his stature that makes it so crazy.

His haircut around this time/earlier has always reminded me of Shawn Hunter from Boy Meets World and I love it [IMG]

Anyone who says Jim is a weak vocalist has not seem him perform Love Don't Wait acoustic, sans mic.

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

this 10000 times over. my girlfriend is a musical theatre fanatic, and she admitted Love Dont Wait was one of the best vocal performances she had seen.

    all we have is time

Nate is a "yeller" in my opinion. He's got a high range but it's not always that pleasant. Nate also has a very weak lower range, so that's a loss in my opinion. Also can be fairly pitchy live. I think Jim is a stronger vocalist, range aside.

I'm still trying to find where someone said he wasn't a good vocalist. I read where you think Nate is a better vocalist, but that's it.

And yeah, you figured me out, been posting on AP for close to 15 years for da lyks.
