I don’t know about anybody else, but I feel like after I started using subs all the time my brain just trained itself to where I never have to divert my eyes. It’s just natural at this point so I’m never distracted

 

I’m just making the point that subtitles are inherently an accessibility issue, and I think acting like it’s dumb to advocate for best practices to help not only people with disabilities but a decent amount of the population, with minimal drawback, is a bit silly. I don’t really see the other side. It is a bit of a learning curve to read the subs and watch the film, I guess, but if you don’t need to use them I don’t get the idea that them just being there is an issue

 

Some people's brains are wired differently, if there's a bunch of shit going on at the bottom of the screen mine focuses on that and nothing else, I'm barely even reading the words, just watching shiny things go by.

I was exactly like that when I was younger and never used them, but once I gradually used them more consistently for whatever reason then it just became natural. But I totally understand how that might not click for everyone.

 

Sorry if a similar point has been made but sound mixing has been so low on some shows and movies in the last several years that you have to have it so high to understand what is being said only to have your eardrums burst any time any loud sequence occurs. So that’s usually when I’ll put captions on.

Imagine complaining about subtitles and then reading multiple pages worth of comments on the topic of subtitles.

The only time I’ve actually opposed subtitles is when I’ve accidentally had them on for an anime thing I was watching dubbed. Because the subs & dubs don’t match, and it breaks my brain.

It kinda also depends on the streamer. Sometimes the subs don't match and sometimes like with crunchyroll if it's dubbed you can't also have subs

 

Showtime subs are the absolute worst. Always ahead or behind and they skip some of the dialogue.

My friend had me watch Attack On Titan with her. It was on crunchy roll and she watched the dub and it had subtitles.

 

That movie Snack Shack looks like it could be fun, but those kids look way too modern for a movie set in 1991.
