At this point I've written off ever getting a statement, feels like forever since the news broke.

When she inevitably releases her next album and goes on a massive tour, I imagine there's 2 possible outcomes related to Marshall. Both sweep the issue under the rug entirely.

Involvement in recording + tour with nothing said / Involvement in recording + new touring drummer

I'm open to being completely wrong, that's actually my preference.

 

There’s also the chance he’s been cut off from involvement with recording but from what we’ve seen, she’s more than happy to call out anyone but her friends.

 

The woman who surrounds herself with with sexual predators is trying to grandstand. I genuinely do not understand. There is no way she lacks this much self-awareness. Someone has dirt on her and when it comes out it will be bad bad.

I said in the politics thread and I will say it here: Learning someone you were previously in a serious longterm relationship with might have been a rapist is a traumatic experience and you guys are absolute freaking weirdos for thinking you're entitled to demand a woman publicly discuss that, and then imply complicity and call her a piece of shit when she doesn't do it immediately.

She needs to not associate with him at all obviously, but beyond that she doesn't owe you anything. The fact she is his ex-parter puts this on a whole different spectrum than if if was just him just being a drummer in her band. There could be tons of legitimate reasons she doesn't want to talk about this publicly that are not "she is sweeping it under the rug!"

yeahhh sorry. this is someone she *actively employs and financially supports*. a statement that he is no longer associated with the music or the writing is the absolute bare minimum effort.

I had no idea there was a relationship between the two. With that knowledge now, yes I agree.

 

Has he even drummed for her since the allegations came out a few months ago? If yes than than would change things, but if no then you're "actively employs" point is null.

 

its not null, actually. we don't know the extent of how involved he is or isnt in her process. it would be extremely silly to imagine she hasnt been writing/recording/demo'ing, and we don't know what his level of involvement is. this is why it feels incredibly murky, and why she, as his "prospective employer" if that feels better for you, should have made a statement.

for christs sake we hold people on this website to a much higher standard for far less. you dont get to pick and choose who you hold accountable just because of who they are.

 

I’m not saying this because I’m disagreeing with you, but he’s not just her drummer. He’s a cowriter and producer for her as well.

 

call me old fashioned, but i like knowing the artists i support and give my own money to don't have accused r*pists on their payroll.

 

The fact that he disappeared from the internet the day the allegation was made and hasn’t mentioned any of the boygenius stuff obviously means something. If they’re just waiting for this to blow over than that sucks and we will find out, but if not, I’m not going to blame Phoebe for wanting to handle this privately and slowly. The last time she accused someone of abuse - abuse that she saw with her own eyes and happened to a friend, not an anonymous poster - she had her entire personal life aired out through a years long lawsuit in which she lost half a million dollars. And that was a case she won! Not to mention she could be a victim of Marshall herself and is coming to terms with it. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes and the vitriol is weird and aggressive.

 

I agree with you here but just want to make the caveat that he hasn’t completely disappeared. Christian Lee Hutson has made posts in the studio with him after the allegations and a couple of the times were around the same time Phoebe had been with Christian as well.

 

While I understand the relationship component adds a massive layer to the situation. Maybe let's not resort to calling people "fucking weirdos" for hoping artists hold the people they employ and create with accountable.

I didn't state she owed the public anything. I am simply surprised based on what I understood of her character and how outspoken she is (this includes the "rot in piss" clip posted above) that she hadn't addressed it.

The only information I previously had was what Marshall is accused of, and that he's her drummer and co-writer. I can't really apologize for not knowing more than that.

It's kind of parasocial too. It's also weird that it's mostly coming from dudes demanding something from a woman. I love the people on this site but man the blindness to context and nuance in here sometimes can be a lot. It's all well meaning but damn.

 

would it feel better for you if women were calling for her to say something as well? because all you have to do to find that is search his name on twitter. incredibly weird to boil this all down to "men cannot hold a woman performer accountable for something" but i am very glad you can all draw these nice lines for yourselves.

 

Pretty much this. I’m not gonna harp on it. Phoebe can respond however privately or publicly she chooses. She’s been known to speak out against abusers and rapists in the industry, but obviously there’s nuance since this time someone she intimately knows and is in business with.

Boygenius has been easier to enjoy because Marshall isn’t involved. If he is with the new album and there’s just no discussion at all then I think that’s it for me.

 

He co-wrote and produced Voyager on the recent EP. He was also a performer on the album. So yeah he’s been involved with boygenius

 

I listened to the EP once and never again. But thank you. Didn’t know that.

 

Christian has definitely posted Instagram stories with him in the studio post-allegation and so has Sofia Wolfson (or at least posted stories with him in it, can't remember if they were studio stories or not) who Marshall has produced music for so I think he is still working but just lowkey now. I personally found it a bit tone deaf for them to post about him (especially since Sofia was posting about him literally the day after the allegation was posted to Reddit)
