    Sundance 2024 pickups. Netflix shelling out the most money getting 5 projects, 4 docs and a sci-fi film.

    • Kneecap - An Irish semi-autobiographical film about the rise of pro-republican Belfast based hip hop group Kneecap. It's in both English and Irish language. Kneecap playing themselves, and Michael Fassbender is also in it. Winner of the NEXT debut filmmaker audience award. Got picked up by Sony Pictures Classics
    • Ibelin - A Norwegian documentary about the life and death of Mats Steen, A legend in the World of Warcraft online community who died of Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 25. The title is the name of his WoW character and is about the power and depth of the relationships we form with others in online communities. Winner of the Audience Award for World Documentary. Picked up by Netflix.
    • A Real Pain - A dramedy directed/written by Jesse Eisenberg, in his feature length directorial debut. Starring Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as two Jewish American cousins who visit Poland after their grandmother's death and end up joining a Holocaust tour. Winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Got picked up by Searchlight
    • It's What's Inside - A sci-fi thriller about a group of estranged friends who gather together in a mansion for a bachelor party. One their college friends who has become a tech mogul shows up late to the party carrying his latest tech development .. A new type of mind bending roleplaying party game. Chaos ensues. Picked up by Netflix.
    • Presence - A psychological thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox. " A family discover they are not alone when they move into a new house ". Picked up by NEON
    • Ghostlight - Drama starring a real-life family of actors Keith Kupferer, Tara Mallen, and their daughter Katherine Mallen Kupferer . Dan, a melancholic construction worker who unexpectedly joins a local theater’s production of Romeo and Juliet. When the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life, he and his family are forced to address a recent tragedy. Picked up by IFC Films
    • My Old Ass - a coming of age comedy about a teen girl who meets her future self (played by Aubrey Plaza) . The older her tells her to never fall in love. She is confident she can follow her own advice until she meets the boy she warned herself about. Picked up by Amazon MGM
    • Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story - Documentary about the aftermath of actor Christopher Reeve's tragic accident and how he became an outspoken disability rights activist. Picked up by Warner Brothers Discovery/DC Films/HBO/CNN Films. James Gunn head of DC films said the film "emotionally floored him"
    • Skywalkers: A Love Story - a documentary about a Russian "rooftopper" couple who set out to climb one of the world's largest skyscrapers, and in the process save their own relationship doing so. Picked up by Netflix
    • Thelma - Comedy starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, Malcolm McDowell, and Nicole Byer. " When 93-year-old Thelma Post is duped by a phone scammer, she embarks on a quest to take back what is hers ". This was Richard Roundtree's last role before his death last year. Picked up by Magnolia Pictures
    • Didi (弟弟) - a coming of age dramedy. " Set in 2008, a 13-year old Taiwanese-American boy learns how to skate, flirt and love his mother " . Winner of the US Dramatic Audience Award and the Special Jury - Ensemble Cast Award. Picked up by Focus Features
    • Daughters - a documentary about 4 young girls preparing for a special "daddy-daughter dance" with their incarcerated fathers held in a Washington DC jail. Takes a look on how mass incarceration effects families through the perspective of a child. Winner of the US Documentary Audience Award and was voted as the overall festival favorite among all categories. Picked up by Netflix
    • Will & Harper - Documentary focusing on Will Ferrell and one of his longtime best friends, comedy writer Harper Steele. Documents a cross country road trip they took together soon after Harper came out to Will that they were undergoing a gender transition. Picked up by Netflix.

    Could be a fun Friday night watch if there’s nothing else going on! Jermaine Fowler was great in coming 2 America and I like Efron & Santino in comedies

    There is some quiet beauty in leaving the last showing after 11 p.m., the theater mostly closed, and driving in dark silence alone with your thoughts.

    I don’t choose showing times based on the vibe I’ll get coming out, but driving home in the dark like that is rad when it’s the right movie.

    My favorite one is probably when I saw Interstellar in an empty theater and drove home around that time.
