Good god the CM Punk news, if true (which it seems to be?) is funny as hell BUT also sad and frustrating as hell. For all the bad and annoying of the character/person, I can’t even imagine how frustrating that’s gotta be to deal with endless injuries over the last 2ish years (maybe not even that long???). And it’s not like these are tiny short-lived injuries, these are major, long recovery times and someone in their mid-40’s is already on limited time to stay a good wrestler. This essentially closes the door on Punk doing anything outside of like what Bret did in that McMahon Mania match.

 

Punk news is a bummer but not a surprise. He can’t stay healthy. And even when he is, he’s like 3 steps slower than he used to be.

I would love if he was on commentary. He’s genuinely one of the best in the game at that.

 

why would you want him to be pinned clean for the IC? I'd think you want to keep him strong and let him drop the belt in a dusty finish or by someone else getting pinned in a multi man match... that way in year or so when you're ready for him to drop the WHC before he turns into another Roman it becomes a really impressive victory for whoever you decide to strap that rocket to

 

CM Punk continues to be his own worst enemy

 

Sucks, almost feels like a joke how every time Punk has a major moment he immediately breaks/tears something

 

because it's 50% of the value proposition - if Gunther keeps the IC and wins the World Title with it, then Gunther benefits big time. If Gunther loses the IC and wins the World Title, then whoever Gunther beats benefits big time AND Gunther does.

I kind of miss when a champ could just lose clean without being “ruined” or whatever. You gotta jump through six hoops to justify a loss now.

Gunther’s interesting because he’s been dominant but kept away from the upper card for the most part. I get wanting him to stay dominant but I also don’t want it to get to where you need to bring in a Brock Lesnar or an other part timer just to switch the IC title now.

 

To me, doesn't really matter how you win the IC title you're still going to benefit from defeating Gunther and getting the belt on you.

Has Gunther ever been pinned before on the main roster?

 

He’s never been pinned since leaving NXT. His only loss was via count out & that was a big deal when it happened. The problem is the guys who he hasn’t beaten are competing for the world title instead of the IC belt, except McIntyre.

Between Jey, Sami, KO, Bron & a few others they have some options. Shit, maybe they call up Ilja from NXT to rekindle that feud.

 

Don’t know it’s been mentioned yet but first hour of Raw is commercial free and Bayley/ Damage CTRL are there

 

Josh Alexander was on Angles podcast and said there were some political things in play for his last match against Ospreay and he said Will told them he doesn’t care and wanted to put Josh over and highlight him

Right. But someone like Jey, Sami, KO or Drew doesn't really need the "pinned Gunther a clean" boost. Bron could benefit from it, but the rest of them are already established stars who can do good work with the IC title but are better off winning it in a multi-person match or under dusty circumstances (like Gunther having to defend the belt night 2 after beating Seth night 1)

 

There are stories to be told with Punk still out of the ring, as a manager of sorts. Play into the voice of the voiceless stuff again. Let him back and uplift the voiceless on the roster

 

Time for WWE to go all out and offer Okada double what AEW are offering with the added bonus of a WM main event.

 

I'm probably one of the few that's actually pretty bummed about the Punk injury. I mean, I get it. It's a pretty easy dunk at this point.

The obvious pivot seems like Gunther, but, unless something has changed very recently, he can't work outside the country right now. So, they'd have to establish him as number one contender in something other than Elimination Chamber.

 

Punk got injured during a Drew McIntyre spot, Rollins got injured during a Jinder Majal spot, now let's keep an eye on the next Heath Slater match...
