According to this database of roughly 1800 games only ELEVEN percent require a download.

While yes it's still recommended to download the patches to fix bugs or other stuff, the games are literally playable from the moment you insert the disc with no internet connection.

 

Everyone here knows I've been very critical of Xbox and the merger, but I never expected it to be this bad. It's like they are taking a flamethrower to a rainforest. What the fuck are they thinking? Especially after their profits and the massive amounts of layoffs last year in the industry.

Do they actually expect people to stay on their side after this? Or is the general consensus that the average gamer won't care/pay enough attention to affect their sales?

 

I agree with you. I'm for a more digital future that gives more ownership to the consumers, but I don't want all physical to die out nor do I want the original version of games prepatches to disappear because I find it interesting for game preservation.

The amount of games that ship with bugs, hard crashes, glitches, unpolished levels can be a good reason why companies don't want to keep their versions of the game around, but I think historically it's pretty significant. You'll never be able to play the true first version of Destiny ever again, same with Siege and so on and so forth.

 

I think it's mixed tbh. Which is unfortunate....but there's undoubtedly people who just wanna play the newest thing and don't follow news. :/

 

I completely understand just walking up to a shelf in best buy and getting the latest game for yourself or your kid and just not knowing/caring, but the amount of people who probably read this news online and are like "oh damn!" and then just shrug and preorder the next ultimate edition of COD with the season pass makes me real upset. As long as it doesn't affect the quality of the games and the output I wonder how many people are going to even see this and care.

 

I agree with everyone’s points, but I’d also like to add that, with the size of games continuing to increase, storage is way too damn small and upgrades are not nearly affordable enough for an all digital future

 

I guess I'm just struggling because I know no company is perfect because let's face it, it's a company, but it makes me really question who I want to support and who to give my money to and it seems like Microsoft and Sony are starting to do things that are getting under my skin a lot.

 

This is a very good point. And there's even been great advancements in storage capacity and pricing in the past few years, but it's not nearly enough. Especially when companies don't even really have to do a great job optimization with their file sizes because they know people are going to buy them anyway. Nintendo is incredible with how they make some of their games so teeny tiny.

 

UT2004 was on like six discs, do they do that anymore

 

I have this overwhelming urge to play this song. No reason why whatsoever.

 

I wanted a new UT and so I looked up what happened to the series and I was very disappointed.

 

Looking at PS5 SSDs right now, the prices are making me choke on my own rage.

 

Crazy how that guy was so successful and popular for a few years and now you never hear about him.

 

Don’t look at Xbox prices then. Lol I at least managed to get a 2tb one on sale for $100 for my PS5. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the 2tb one for Xbox under $250. Might as well just buy a whole other console with these prices

 

I must be missing out because I don't play every game I own at the same time. I just manage my games by adding or removing them as I like. The X has A LOT of storage space.

Personally, I just want a 1TB stick for the PS5 so I can fit a few more big games on it and still have a storage cap so there’s an incentive to play them.

 

Thats what I have for my expanded storage. But my internet is pretty good that I still delete/redownload all the time.

 

It IS significant for preservation sake. And as evidenced in this last year, digital licenses can be revoked at anytime and that's worrisome. There's not many games that require a constant Internet connection (looking at you Ubisoft) or really any that require ANY kind of connection to verify a license. And besides, I think we're all forgetting there's 2nd and third world countries that don't have internet speeds to match the amount that will be required to download full games. Hell there's still places here in the US in the middle of nowhere using satellite or whatever. Places just don't have the infrastructure for an all digital future right now.

Edit: oh yeah and data caps lol. Not all providers or plans are unlimited, so having to download multiple games is gonna hit that cap pretty quick.

Lol I wasn't gonna say COD but you took the words right out off my mouth heh. In the end I hope people care, and it may sound defeatist but I just don't think these corpos are gonna care that people DO care.

PS5 storage prices hurts my soul. I've got a 2TB right now and I dread whenever that fills up a d I have to get another.....it's gonna be like swapping PS1 and PS2 memory cards haha.

 

I mean I switch between different games a lot and I don’t think I’ve ever been able to have more than 6-7 big games installed at a time. Even worse when I actually used to have Warzone installed. It’s obviously a lame thing to complain about, but it’s just inconvenient because re-downloading a game obviously takes much longer than just popping in a disc. I’m at least lucky to have pretty fast download speeds, so it’s not the worst thing in the world.

 

It's going to happen no matter how you spin it. Best to buckle in for the ride. Last I checked PC's don't have disc drives anymore either.

Yeah I rarely play a single game from beginning to end. I change it up depending on whatever mood I'm in. I mean just on my weekly rotation:
Genshin
Honkai
FFXIV
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Sea of Stars

 

Eventually. But as long as there's vocal audiences of people complaining and giving feedback, there stands a chance of slowing that eventual future down. Just look at what happened with the PS3/Vita stores. Sony listened.
