Putting people's blueskying about fatigue aside, I would love to read an in-depth study on what exactly happened with this film. Like, actually gauging the population to find out what kept them from seeing this film in particular.

And I'm not saying fatigue isn't a reason, but when you think about how badly this film in particular did in comparison to everything else, I feel like there's gotta be more to it. Like why this film? Just not resonating with the characters? People under the assumption they need to watch other things to understand it?

Like, in comparison, did Captain Marvel only do well because it was the one after Infinity War? If it came out at any other time, would it have done just as badly?

I feel like there's a story that could be written here if someone did the research.

I honestly feel like it fatigue. They released a film with characters you don’t know unless you watch a couple shows on Disney+. The casual audience don’t want/care to do that. There’s just too much to catch up

But this is a misconception, because you actually don't have to watch the shows at all. But it's a good question, if that the misconception is keeping audiences away. That's why I think research would be interesting, to find out if that's the real issue or not.

Also, sorry, maybe I'm stubborn, but I feel like it can't just be "fatigue". Like, this movie bombed hard. Why this particular film?

I don’t see another reason why this movie bombed. It simply had characters people either didn’t know (because they didn’t watch their Disney+ shows) or simply didn’t care for. The only real research you can find is the audience that bought tickets for the film. Which was majority males above the age of 25. Pretty standard for the mcu.

That too but the sad part is that the movie had more males buying tickets than females according to box office reports.

It wasn't a good movie, it was marketed terribly, people have fatigue, it was tied to three other MCU projects to get the full picture and people are misogynistic assholes that wanted it to fail regardless.

MCU is a mess right now and so is its fandom.

Blue Beetle and Black Adam also both didn't do great and it looks like Aquaman will flop too

but yeah there was a feeling you had to see say Endgame in theaters because there would be plot developments and it would impact the future of the franchise and that's just not there at the moment

Basically what others have said - There’s no momentum in the MCU like there was for Captain Marvel. Plus, the cast couldn’t promote it and the director got smeared in the press. Plus other superhero movies bombing (Blue Beetle, Black Adam, The Flash), MCU shows not being well recieved and the only one that really made bank (GOTG 3) was because it was the last one with Gunn. Plus people aren’t coming back to theater. Plus an unfocused ad campaign.

It was a perfect storm of everything going wrong. I’m sure Disney will take all the wrong lessons from this, but it just seems like they need to take the L and re-evaluate. It just sucks it happened with this and not like Quantumania.

  13. I think the question isn't why did it bomb, but rather what right did it have to succeed?

Captain Marvel had stuff going on for it: the 90s-theme, introduction of the Skrulls, de-aged Nick Fury, came out during the MCU's heyday, came out right after Infinity War when people were dying for more, theatrical release movied were the MCU's only outlet (no Disney+), the Infinity War stinger got audiences hyped to know how Captain Marvel could help bring the heroes back...

The Marvels came out during the MCU's post-Endgame slump with no true reason to exist as a theatrical release and they expected audiences to show.

I mean, this feels like nonsense to me. What right does any movie have to succeed?

Are you suggesting that a film with these characters cannot and should not exist on its own merits?

Just seems like a weird position to take.

What also bums me out is on Reddit, people are already expecting Brave New World to flop because it's Anthony Mackie and not Chris Evans. Like, reading people talk about it like it's a foregone conclusion. They've already written it off.

A film with these characters can exist on its own merits, but when it has no distinctive value it’s unlikely to succeed commercially as a theatrical release in today’s landscape.

This film didn’t have anything special to say in a world with superhero movie (and TV show) over saturation, and if it did, it wasn’t marketed well. The MCU “event” factor that normally gets people to pay wasn’t there for this one.

I think success can be measured in different ways and depending on the movie. In the case of an MCU movie, I think commercial success today means making the numbers Guardians 3 made.

I think the strike and actors being unable to promote hurt a lot. You know in the weeks leading up at all the press events and talk shows, the 3 leads would have been hammering home how you don’t need to be familiar with the whole team yet and that it’s a fun/light team up adventure. I think being able to do that and actually see the personalities heading in beyond the (bad) trailers, would have helped a lot.

So I fucked up. We were going to see this over the weekend and it's already left our theaters. I guess we're waiting to stream it now.
