the original content was posted in direct response to me describing two very clear and honest examples of cars endangering me on my drive home from work. (Probably people that "only had 2-3 drinks".) They weren't instances of disobeying traffic laws, they were instances of me following them to the letter. In response, multiple people basically posted "nah cyclists are usually the assholes." and just because I am naturally defensive of cyclists who can't afford a car because I was one, and TO BE FAIR, I admit that "if cross traffic is totally dead, yeah i just cross whenever like a pedestrian" this has turned into, "Randall's a hypocrite for calling those drivers out."

It absolutely was made into a moral argument about me. Of course no one's gonna go back and read and double check but that's what happened. But that's why I'm like "alright we wanna tie this into laws and morality, let's talk about the real problem, let's talk about how America's government has FAILED us when it comes to sustainable, forward thinking transportation and it's not the fault of the cyclists that car-centric thinking dominates the road and makes it unsafe to travel anywhere on foot. We should change that, not blindly defend it."

Nobody personally attacked you in any of these original posts. Everyone clearly said in their own experiences, they’ve had personal issues with bikers in their city.

I know it’s something your passionate about, but the original talking points were people annoyed by bikers in their own experience.

I know this thread can dog pile on you, and this is probably how it felt when it started, but I truly don’t believe it was personal.

I know this is just a Vox article, but it references Census data

It's not just hipsters — lots of poor people bike

yeah there are a lot of wealthy city folks biking just cause it's trendy, and yeah poor families with a lot of children are forced to buy at least one family car out of necessity, but that doesn't mean everyone else in the family ain't biking / walking to work or school etc

The wildest thing of all of this to me is the majority of you arguing with me can't even admit that I have a point and that laws often overlook the nuances of situations that aren't the norm for typical middle class people. That more than anything is what makes me be annoyed that we've reduced all of that to "Randall runs red lights, disregard anything he says about bike safety"

I think you should know most of us by now to know that a lot of us strongly oppose a lot of archaic and questionable laws that hurt minorities and lower classes.

I don't dispute that all your hearts are in the right place but it's also a privilege thing. If you've never had to bike everywhere only, in all weather, on roads that have no place for you to ride and drivers that don't give you space, you're not going to think about that, you're just going to think about that one asshole cyclist that made you screech to a halt before you turned right. Only the wealthy neighborhoods in most cities have bike lanes and bike trails, and I got to live in medium-income neighborhoods in ATL, and in DC's subrubs that was like that but I got priced out of both. So having to adapt to riding on the road is a constant process, and that's partially why i bought a car again cause i simply can't do that as much anymore.

I work remote but if I could bike to work I would over driving... but its really up to the area's infrastructure.. The Fayetteville/Bentonville areas of Arkansas really advocate biking and have trails that run through the cities, thus making it feasible to do so. But like... if I were in Houston there's not so much an infrastructure in the surrounding areas to 'bike to work' without having to be in traffic lanes and shit most of the route. Its just not feasible.

So to me, its really up to how the state and/or area you live considers biking as an actual means of transportation to work and such, and not jsut a recreational thing.

I do own a bike myself and enjoy riding it because of all the trails here.. I dunno if this even applies to the conversation going on but whatever. I typed all this already.

I'm not saying I didn't grow up with privilege, but I am saying that I hit rock bottom financially as an adult and that is a whole other angle of perspective, I'm grown, my parents obviously weren't giving me money during that time, I had to work in restaurants where COVID was a risk just to keep my student loans eligible for me to finish school etc. You know all this.
