I don't know if it's good, per se -- there's a few loose ends that are never fully fleshed out -- but After Hours aside, it's the most fun I've had watching a Yuppie Nightmare this season next to Bad Influence. The possessive roommate aspect was believable, felt like it was pulled straight out of a true crime video, but I think what really carries this one is the performance of Jennifer Jason Leigh. An excellent performance, she's genuinely giving it her all and you can tell. Fun movie!

Saw Fearless by Peter Weir for the first time and holy fuck what a great movie. I didn't even cry; I wept. I think I'm a bit of a Weir stan anyway but that felt so incredibly profound. I don't think anyone but Jeff Bridges could have made it that transcendent for me, either. Goddamn.

Honestly, in a different way than you'll expect most likely.

I've been watching for it to hit streaming for years at this point. Kanopy just added it so I threw it on immediately.

They basically both never stream anywhere, despite the rest of his career being readily available and both movies being Oscar nominated. I wonder if there’s something with the rights

There are days where I’d call The Fog my favorite horror movie. I love the sense of place. I love the Warriors-ish DJ-as-Greek-Chorus thing making it mythic. I love the fact that everything is so legibly directed and shot. If they did another remake now, you wouldn’t see a goddamn thing in that fog.

  15. Terrifier 2 - 7.5/10
Second watch, almost positive this is the most violent movie I've ever seen. And that's the pull - that and the super-slasher runtime (over 135 minutes). Neither completely work for me -- like the first film, it's mean-spirited in a way that takes the fun out of some of the kills for me -- but Leone succeeds at going for a "character-driven" sequel that does a great job of balancing what Terrifier has become known for with characters you actually care about. I could do with about 30 minutes and maybe two less kills (blasphemy, I know), but it's genuinely really interesting to see Leone set goals for himself and grow as a filmmaker.

    Thanksgiving - 8.5/10
I am not an Eli Roth fan, so I am pleased to report this more than surpassed my expectations. It's about as silly as you'd expect having started as a fake Grindhouse trailer and paying homage to so many 80s slashers, but if you stomach Roth's dialogue and some logistical question marks, it may be the best traditional slasher since Halloween 2018. A great blend of insane kills and genuine laughs. Would recommend seeing with a crowd if you can.

  16. Daddy Longlegs - 10/10

That thing your parents did or let you do as a kid that could have killed you, but now you laugh about it? Almost everyone has one. Well, you lived. And if you're thinking about ever having kids, you're probably left with the fear of impacting them negatively with your actions -- something that's impossible to avoid entirely -- but you're almost guaranteed to be a better father than Lenny. A beautiful and perfect debut from the Safdie brothers.

Won't You Be My Neighbor (2018) - A story about an incredible man and a lesson about the role television and now new media plays in shaping our children. We had a report in Australia come out last month showing the results of our previous government's decision to relax the quotas around the requirements for childrens TV, unsurprisingly - “It shows that, without regulation, commercial platforms won’t make any investment in children,” - the Australian Children’s Television Foundation.
Not fun to think the lesson was also learnt by corporations, lobbyists, tech companies, who won't be letting it happen again and that algorithms will be shaping our future towards profitability.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) - Catching up on cannon and its blasting shot to shot magic through the air! Pick any lense you want and dive in, cinema, drama, feminism, critic of state, religion, queer/identity, historicity it's all there.

Stop Making Sense (1984) - when this was announced I bemoaned the late Australian re-release in the general thread, but within the delay after 7 years the Sydney IMAX reopened! Anyways it was too big and i'll be watching Napoleon in a regular cinema. I usually prefer systems theory, WYBMN and TPoJoA were too down on great man theory, sure It makes for better stories but would US children be ruined without Mr. R? did a little girl really decide the 100 yrs war or would some else be the star if they never existed? Noone else could be at the centre of Stop Making Sense, David Byrne was born to wear that giant suit and rock the 80s new wave style, still a great man cant exist without his system, the party doesn't start until the full backing ensemble turns up and gets slippery.

Elephant Man (1980) - Thank the great man David Lynch found cinema. This is mostly shot straight, and works but the sequences where he sprinkles in his special sauce take it to another level.
Kinda fun to look at this through classism, where its message is to not behave like a dirty worker and each step-up through the ranks from doctor to famous socialite to princess treat Mr Merrick with increasing grace. And although I hate that, the last 2 referendums in my country on gay rights and acknowledging indigenous people correlated very strongly along class and education lines. The tradies aren’t watching enough Lynch.

Really, really good. Great, even. The apes have more nuanced and character development than many human characters in the past 10 years. Some absolutely killer shots and moments that mimic Rise while upping the stakes and scale of it all. I, for one, welcome our new Ape overlords.

The Holdovers - Pretty good movie, Paul Giamatti was very Paul Giamatti and that was nice but the supporting cast stole the show. It was the first movie for the teenage lead Dominic Sessa and he was fantastic. I hope people take notice because he played the role wonderfully and with some bigger pictures I can see him making it.

  25. War for the Planet of the Apes - 8.5/10
As smart, dark, and nuanced of a blockbuster as they come. They really don't make movies like this anymore (and this was only six years ago!) unless you count The Way of Water. The emotional beats are extremely effective, the visual effects border on incredible, and the score is beautiful. Steve Zahn's Bad Ape is a swing and a miss, but it's easy to overlook considering how serious the rest of the film is. What a trilogy. Cautiously optimistic for Kingdom.
