i would agree, and this is something i would like to discuss with you and any others that would care to jump in. Is that inherently problematic? To have a a favorite albums list that isnt diverse as far as race/gender/orientation is concerned? Is it a stretch to assume someone is problematic or has deep rooted issues because their album list, or really any favorite entertainment/art list isnt diverse? I mean, I would say that a person that doesnt have a diverse list is certainly missing out on some absolute masterpieces of music and literature and etc, but does that make the person racist/sexist/problematic for not having a diverse list?

Please, do not be upset with me for those of you that respond if my wording is poor. I'm just really curious about this and I honestly dont know how I feel about it. I have friends that basically only listen to white guy guitar rock, but they arent inherently problematic or gross people. I urge them to check out more because theyre missing out, but I dont think theyre worse people for not listening to that music or art or w/e. I would love to hear what women or PoC or LGBTQ+ people thought of this as well.

i was messing around when i said ridicule. but i do believe people need to do better in consuming entertainment that is diverse. i dont think people are bad people if they dont initially, they are problematic if they reject the importance of doing so. everyone is subconsciously racist/sexist/etc in some ways. for some people it manifests in the entertainment they consume.

i just feel like in a community as active and diverse as this one only listening to one vein of music is very improbable unless you're actually trying to not diversify

but maybe they just dont like that music? they can appreciate it, they can try to understand it, but if they dont like it then thats just how it goes? although i will agree that sticking to one strict vein of music with a very strict vein of one type of person making that music is a bit problematic and can be a flag for other issues.

i do agree with this. i think if you appreciate, say, hip hop as an artform and understand its importance, but simply just dont jive well with that genre, then you arent racist or a bad person per se.

i got into many arguments with people about liking and not liking female vocalists as much as male vocalists. you are socialized to like certain music, it is your responsibility to undo that socialization when it's leaving people out. if you say "well i just like male vocalists more im not sexist," you arent taking a critical look at why your tastes are the way they are.

well what would their reasons be for not jiving with it? why are they more drawn to rock music or whatever music they like more? why havent they given hip-hop the time of day? these are questions they need to ask themselves.

so female voices of similar styles of music (yes, i know some genres have much lower percentage of women in their genres, that's a whole other sort of discussion) just don't happen to be liked? due to what i said before, i don't expect someone to have predominantly women on their list but to have such a low percentage, especially in genres who definitely have a decent population of women in it, reeks of something else odd
