I think only “23” is a better closing track in the scene. It just floors me every time. I would give a lot to hear it live.

A recent take I've been mulling over is that 21CB is a strong album on the whole and goes to a lot of great places musically, but American Eulogy / See the Light is not a patch on Homecoming / Whatsername, which is one reason why the album didn't get the same reception.

21CB is super underrated as a whole, it just has a bit too much filler and its radio singles are far worse than AI’s, which probably doesn’t help either

I love 21CB. The highs on that album, to me, are as good as American Idiot, which I hold in highest regard. I agree that the singles held it back, and the album as a whole isn't as strong.

I used to go wild to "American Eulogy" in Green Day Rock Band.

Does anyone else feel like "Walking Alone" would have made much more sense on Warning vs. Nimrod? At least vibes-wise.

Yeah I mentioned the bridge lyrics earlier but those closing lyrics are great too. "Forgetting you but not the time" gets a major pass for rhyming time with time because it's again such a perfect simple description of what it's like to think back on the highschool sweetheart/first love/etc. You start forgetting specifics and faces and what was said and just remember the time and how it made you feel.

I remember “Whatsername” being my favorite song on the album at the time and that not being the popular choice among my eighth grade classmates, lol. Glad to have been vindicated! That song is amazing and is probably my favorite Green Day song.

Y'all are making me feel old, I was a junior in college when AI came out. Saw them perform it in full in Toronto at an 800-capacity club.

Hahaha same. That one and Holiday were my two immediate favorites, and Jesus of Suburbia as well, or at least the first two parts. When Holiday got released as a single I was hyped because I knew everyone else was gonna get to jam to it now

“Whatsername” and “Letterbomb” settled in as my favorites pretty quickly, and still are. But I remember it being so exciting hearing all those singles everywhere. “Boulevard” was so, so massive that fall/winter.

Same haha. Very cool you saw it performed all the way through in such a small venue! Guessing that's on your list of all-time great shows to see.

Ha, I listened to American Idiot for the first time in years a couple months ago and Whatsername really stood out to me, which was weird because I never remembered being into that one at the time.

Actually I should add that Give Me Novacaine was also an immediate favorite. I was really into that one and Extraordinary Girl early on before they eventually fell down my list. But as I said was teaching myself guitar at the time so strumming along to Give Me Novacaine was cool. I also loved playing the "solo" from it which I'm pretty sure was just an arpeggio chord lol. That solo, Holiday's solo, and American Idiot's solo were the first time I ever tried playing any "solos" haha

I loved/love it as well, but I remember getting tired of the I Don't Care part after a while and it made it kind of a slog to the point where I often didn't make it to parts 4 and 5 because i'd want to move on after pt 2 ended haha.

The soft part at the end of Part 5 was always a great part of that album too, "I don't feel any shame I won't apologize" etc

Yeah, the one time I was thankful to compete for a smaller market since I was in college. If I was at home, I would have been aiming for Irving Plaza in NYC and that would have been borderline impossible. 2 tickets to the Phoenix theater in Toronto was oddly easy.

EDIT: I should clarify that Toronto is hardly a "Small" market, just smaller than NYC.

AI came out the first month of my freshman year of high school, so to say it's overwhelmingly nostalgic for me is an understatement. Unquestionably a seminal, all time record for me.

I got to see them twice on the tour (the first with New Found Glory and Sugarcult, and the second with My Chemical Romance playing basically a full headline set as the only opener - talk about insane), and they're still two of my favorite shows and fondest memories of my whole high school experience.

I missed out on seeing Green Day with MCR by a few months, which will always be one of the biggest missed opportunities in my life. I ended up seeing them with Jimmy Eat World that year, but I was already a huge MCR fan at that point and wouldn't get into Jimmy until much later. Still a great first concert though.

I unapologetically love the Broadway cast recording of American Idiot- the harmonies are wonderful. I won’t say sorry for this!

I also got to see Billie Joe in the show which was pretty cool
