We just heard that guy on that Tweet for some Pats radio station, who called in saying “BELICHICK BLOWS, THE LEAGUE’s PASSIN HIM BY” and that was DEFINITELY a strong Boston accent lol

Randall, that wasn’t the Boston accent. Thats just what Boston liquor stores opening at 9am, being declared essential businesses, and 7 bottles of cheap whiskey sounds like

 

the boston accent *is* very real, but also wildly exaggerated much like the brooklyn/queens/nyc accent is on television and in movies.

 

I really liked a New Orleans comedian who came through the club recently, who accurately pointed out the Cajun accent is NOT the New Orleans accent and that’s how you can tell someone’s never been there if they don’t know the difference.

He was much funnier about it and I don’t remember how he set up the bit, but he basically declared New Orleans folks talk like New Yorkers who are high and that is the most accurate thing I’ve ever heard

 

The Boston accent is as real as the cap. It technically exists, and it’s prevalence is wildly overinflated to the point of wondering if it’s real at all lol

 

I’ve only actually known like one or two people who had a strong Boston accent. One was on food network a bunch and they made her exaggerate it to a comical level.

 

i feel like the strong NYC accent comes from certain groups of immigrants whose families learned English on the fly

like, I’d imagine Polish and Italian etc accents have a hand in why the stereotypical NY accent is how it is

 

What’s really interesting to me is AAVE accents vary WILDLY by location too

like, Idris Elba couldn’t just do a mainstream black American accent like you hear in 90s movies for The Wire, he had to learn the Baltimore one and the weird way they say words like “do” and “job”

 

Interestingly, the Atlanta blaccent is actually probably the most mainstream one even though it does have a southern drawl in it

 

My wife’s parents grew up in Everett, MA and I can assure you they definitely pronounce some words the craziest of ways lol

We also found home videos from when were kids and my mom had a crazy Boston accent back in the 90’s.

 

ive heard some very real strong boston accents but almost exclusively elsewhere in eastern mass and in ri.

 

my first watch of the wire i wasnt very familiar w idris elba and would have never guessed he was british. watching now though i can definitely hear it sometimes lol. same w mcnulty
