  4. Leaks hurt bands when they replace legal sales or streams. In this day and age, with Spotify/Apple Music, streaming via those services provides (a little) revenue that is not provided by downloading and playing a leak. The replacement harms bands in revenue and SPS numbers with charting entities. Leaks may lead to more people checking out a band (that argument is tenuous for a band around as long as JEW) or going to their show, but if those plays aren't replaced with either purchased or streaming service plays, it's still noticeably harmful.

alright i'll just hit the questions you asked me since my answers could inadvertently address things in your paragprahs

i think opinions themselves are a fluid thing, new information or a new perspective is often the catalyst to a change but i dont think those things are objective or make my opinion more objective just because i begin to see something in a different light.

potentially yes, but it depends on the opinion really. for the example you gave, i dont think one is more informed than the other. the person who hears background noise could be and probably is totally valid in their opinion. as is the person who sees the song for what it is. i think this plays into my view that its a subjective thing, and again im not sure that just because someone hears something a certain way that their opinion is less informed.

yes but i dont believe that makes my taste at all objective. i think it just makes my taste unique to me. people, as they pay more attention and refine their tastes, often grow into a unique identity of what their taste is that's separate from anyone else's taste. this doesnt mean their taste is objective better than other people's tastes, even those with tastes that arent as refined or interesting. its just different.

critical consensus is a thing yeah. that doesnt mean people who go against the grain are wrong or less valid than the consensus. there are plenty of highly praised albums i dont like. if someone told me my opinion was less valid because the album has good reviews id frankly feel like they were insulting my intelligence as a music listener.

songwriting/production requires technical skill though. and really you dont need that technical skill to make worthwhile art. but, people naturally get better at things the more they do it. however, if it were an objective truth that an artists newer output where they grew is "better" objectively, why do so many people tend to prefer a band's early work over the rest of their discography. i mean, obviously there are bands who are exceptions but even those bands have fans that like the early stuff over their more mature, more refined, more exploratory work. some thursday fans still think full collapse is their opus (not me haha). everyone knows taking back sunday peaked in 2004. and so on. everyone has their own personal opinion of how a band or artists trajectory has gone, i mean hell the rankings in this very thread are far from a general consensus. its a pretty subjective thing.

  11. Are you saying that Taking Back Sunday factually stopped getting better in 2004? Hehehehhe

I'll properly comment tomorrow but I think I've finally pinpointed why we aren't going to see eye to eye on this topic.

    Prepare thine closing arguments! Haha

yeah i dont believe my streaming funds artists at all. i dont pay for streaming to support artists, i do it for convenience and so i can listen to everything i want to listen to. i buy vinyl and go to shows to support the artists i want to support. still, i believe streams are better than leaks because enough people streaming something at least leads to some money, even if it isnt adequate. some money is better than no money. but again, i dont use streaming as my way to support artists. i buy records, i go to shows, i buy merch. i spread the word on here, on my podcast, with my friends in real life.

    all we have is time

If an author is releasing an ebook, but there's a website where you can download a PDF of the entire book for free... do you really think the ebook is going to sell as many copies as if there were nowhere to read it for free?

To say it's not going to affect sales whatsoever assumes that not one person is going to steal it and not buy it, which is putting a lot of faith in the hands of the human race..

@duritzfan13 yeah but popular albums all endup on torrents sites no matter if they leaked ahead of time or not

Yes illegal downloads in general hurt bands, not just leaks. But an album leaked ahead of time will do more damage than it ending up on a torrent site after it's out
