Do we know for certain if the Letters masters where destroyed in the '08 fire, or are rights still owned by Epic/Sony? This would absolutely be my white whale as well. At least it sounds like we are getting ReadySexGo soonish.

The label owns those masters. I asked him about it when I interviewed him back around the Afraid of Ghosts time, and he basically said that he’d love to put those albums out on vinyl, but has no real control over it because the label owns the recordings and doesn’t care enough about him as an artist to do anything with them. For what it’s worth though, Matt Nathanson said the same thing to me about Some Mad Hope, and that eventually got a pressing, so I think it would just take some vinyl label getting the license.

Also, the fact that they somehow got the masters back for those M3 albums gives me hope it will eventually happen. Very curious how they went about doing that, since it really seems like they got everything.

Thats good news, I had hoped it was something like that. Although Butch doesn't have the biggest fanbase, he has passionate fans that will purchase anything he puts out (especially Letters on vinyl). I never thought I'd see the M3 albums on vinyl either so that alos gives me hope.

A hearty “haha” to the people trying to sell their old War All The Time vinyl for over $100. When I just bought it for like $30.

Here's the segment of the interview. I got a kick out of his comments on re-recording his album. Inadvertently shitting on the Taylor's Version concept years before it became the fad!

Gonna Ride My Palomino, Ride 'im to the Fair.

My White Whales are silly because I've had the opportunity (with most of 'em) to get them... but for some reason or another I let 'em slip:

    Mr. Bungle "California"
    Ween "The Mollusk"
Tripping Daisy "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb"
    Super Furry Animals "Radiator"
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks "s/t," "Pig Lib," "Real Emotional Trash" (and it would be magical if the Dark Wave e.p. would be pressed.)

You're right. When I was making my list I MEANT to only do 1 album a band so I kept that off but then I got to Park and had such a hard time deciding which so I went ahhhh screw it and forgot to add Decomposer. Those 2 albums were amazing. I know they were repressed s lil less than a decade ago but hopefully with anniversaries coming up........

2003-2007 those were some good ass times full of albums I feel deserve attention.

Is it bad that I get a little rush of joy when I see someone’s white whale and I own it?

There are a few that have been mentioned that I didn’t even realize had become hard to find. Someone mentioned Goo Goo Dolls’ Gutterflower, and I scooped that one up on Amazon like a year and a half ago for 15 bucks. Vinyl is super weird that way, though. One day, something is readily available, and then suddenly it’s going for $100+ on Discogs.
