absolutely MASSIVE amount of hypocrisy in pointing out all of the reasons why everyone should actively support and help one group of people fighting desperately against the full powers of a world-class military being brought down to bear on them with the sole purpose of maximizing their pain, suffering, humiliation, and ultimately their eradication - no matter what means they use - and then mocking another group of people for doing the exact same thing

I am not trying to argue that the situations are completely identical, obviously there are major, major differences - but I don't think it makes it okay to eradicate an entire people and steal their country simply because they had a country to start with

the stance of being passionately opposed to 'settler colonialism' yet being entirely okay with what is being done in the name of Russky Mir right now does not make sense to me

Who says the folks sympathizing with Israel after an extremely bad terrorist attack are definitely "okay" with what Israel is doing? I mean obviously there are the bloodthirsty folks out there, but those aren't the ones being called out in here. This thread is kicking out at anyone that says they feel for both Israel and Palestine, for heaven's sake. People that are openly saying "Palestine isn't the only problem here" are being attacked as supporting genocide because they didn't say "Israel is bad and what Hamas did was actually just freedom fighting" lol

TYT has gone off the deep end a while back but it really feels like nobody has wanted to fully call them out on it. Anna especially but Cenk is going off it too just in a slightly different direction.

See this is exactly what we're talking about lol. No one here is saying both sides are equal. But I am pointing out that running out saying "israel holds full responsibility" without even saying "Okay what Hamas did to those people is pretty horrific and bad" is going to cause the large majority if people to tune you out and not give a fuck what else you have to say or anything you point out to them showing Israel's ultimate responsibility for what's going on. Like, if your goal is to get more people to understand why you're saying that, and start to see Israel as a problem, if not THE problem in the situation, then attacking anyone that says "civilians getting killed at music festivals and inside their homes is bad and makes me sad" or whatever else they're saying as "seeking to draw a false equivalence between the occupied and the occupier" and "man you totally woulda supported the British Empire/Slavery/The Holocaust/etc"...well, that probably isn't going to convince anyone. And they'll see you and the folks supporting Palestine as some pretty awful people that they'd rather not associate with.

Agreed. It's probably the thing that frustrates me the most in talking to anyone about political stuff. My wife routinely tells me my approach is too aggressive and makes people feel attacked and like they're dumb lol. She's much better at explaining things in ways people can digest them than I am. But it is unfortunately the reality we live in. People are emotional and...I don't know if self-involved/main character syndrome is the right way to explain it, but they definitely take anyone questioning their world view in a way that causes discomfort/cognitive dissonance as a personal attack way too easily in my opinion. I'm also not a psychologist so what the fuck do I know

 

you’re right, and a lot of the people who get angry at people coming out of the woodwork to condemn Hamas’s actions after being silent or in some cases even celebrating Israel’s destruction for years prior are also people that are emotional so maybe they don’t feel like trying to do debate club over it. like yeah people are emotional over what Hamas did because it was brutal and wrong but people are also emotional over the fact that no one has given a shit about Israel doing the same shit on a scale much greater than that
