I don’t think I could choose between Smash and Dookie, tbh. I loved both endlessly when I was younger. Both also have GOATed intros

Offspring never did their American Idiot. They did the more normal thing where you just get old, take more time between records, and try to figure out some balance between acting your age and proving you can still make music like you did when you were 20. American Idiot gave Green Day a second prime/time in the sun and the momentum to spin their wheels with popularity impunity for the last decade.

Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace was such a good album and deserved to be their second wind. It almost was, I guess, for one song at least.

I think part of the magic of American Idiot is that it was good pop punk to the pop punk people and it was just huge undeniable modern rock to the rest of the world. I haven’t listened to it much since it was released but I remember that Offspring record being more solid as an energetic back-to-basics, no-frills punk Offspring album (which I think is kinda cooler in the long run).

    Oh yeah. Lol. Good call.

(I remember they aped a riff or something? If that Offspring album is like a whole AI rip or not as fast and straight ahead as I remember, ignore my last few posts.)

The problem I think with Offspring nowadays is they're way too inconsistent with putting out material to even get and keep any momentum. It took them four years to put out Days Go By and then another nine(!) years to put out Let The Bad Times Roll, and both albums had some questionable inclusions.

I think The Offspring is just self aware that they are a touring band mostly and don't have new music in them as much, which is totally fine. Bands don't NEED to make new music if they don't feel it, and they have said many times they aren't going to just force new music.

They’re doing fine too. They fill up amphitheaters and get on a lot of big-name rock festivals. I’m sure they’re satisfied where they are in their career

Clearly. I mean, the last album had a five-year old single, a piano version of one of their bigger hits, a classical music cover, and an outro on a twelve track album that took nine years to deliver.

I'm not trying to be mean and the album has some good songs on it, but still.

Nah the album as a whole is good and very Offspringy just the last song is SUPER Green Day lol

No I completely agree, I'm just saying some artists are OK being a touring artist (look at Billy Joel) instead of cranking out new albums and The Offspring seem to be content doing so.

I take Green Day for all of those matchups, but personally I like Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace more than 21CB.

Lots of great memories jamming that album while playing Modern Warfare 2 with my friends

I also think it helped that Green Day changed their aesthetic a little bit and looked a little bit more like the emo/post hardcore/etc bands that were blowing up in the couple years prior to American Idiot, helped draw that crowd to the album as well. I think The Offspring still looked and dressed like 90s skater dudes in 2004 haha. Again probably not a huge deal, but the look can have an impact I feel.

Correct, that being said Good Riddance was (and still is) a massively successful and ubiquitous hit song and has culturally outlasted anything from either band from those aforementioned albums. It's funny the only Offspring song I really ever hear on the radio is Self Esteem and occasionally the Kids Aren't Alright, but what had propelled Americana to such commercial heights was Pretty Fly for a White Guy.

I just discovered this! I can’t believe I wasn’t aware of this movie. Is it any good? Should I check it out?

Ordinary World is the first GD song I added to some of my playlists in a loooong time!
