I don't really feel strongly one way or other about the tush push unless there's like worries for injuries. i haven't been following it all that closely.

 

Eh, those things are feasibly stoppable though. You can have your defense "match" pre-snap (follow Tyreek closely) or you can scheme it where the minute Tyreek moves, two defenders intuitively know they're swapping responsibilities. You can target and blow up the lineman that's shielding Tyreek.

What do you "scheme" to stop 1200+ lbs of dudes pushing for one yard? By the time a defense reacts to the snap count, it's already too late and its too much momentum to just throw 3-4 defenders at them in response.

 

Putting 1300+ lbs of dudes pushing them backwards?

 

That's not siding with James Harden, sorry if I was unclear. I hate that James Harden has proliferated the gather-step loophole. It's always been a technicality in the rules, but Harden literally gets like 20 points a game from using that extra third step to lunge around people without putting the ball where it can even potentially be poked away, and without the defender even being allowed, by rule, to get in his way. And now all the young guys abuse it (looking at you, Gilgeous-Alexander) and the NBA game is so much softer and dumber now cause it's constant fouls from guys using that cheat code to get to the net and draw fouls.

That's an example of, it's "legal" but it's fuckin bogus and should inspire a change in the rules.

 

When you factor in momentum, though, 1300 pounds is not going to stop 1200 pounds within 1 yard, if the 1200 pounds got the jump on them and put ALL THEIR FORCE forward a split second earlier, because they know the snap count.

 

it's like if a car is moving 7 mph and hits a stationary huge pickup truck, the truck is still going to jolt backwards

The issue is you can't succeed unless MULTIPLE players correctly guess the snap count and that's lame, its one play where the split second between the ball being snapped and the defense responding creates a HUGE disadvantage

 

i do think that's changing. they put rules in two years ago to dramatically decrease the flopping and hurling into the lane to get contact, which coincides with harden starting to be mid and luka not being able to drag the team into the playoffs. it definitely ruined the league for like a five year period but it isn't really accurate to 2023 basketball.

The Jaguars defense, if it felt like, could put 3,213 lbs right on the defensive line if they wanted to stop it... I simply refuse to believe this play is impossible to stop.

 

there have been a lot of rule changes in the last two years, some good some bad, but yeah that's one of them. you can't make "non-basketball moves" to draw a foul, which eliminates a lot of his/luka/others' hop step and plowing into the lane to get contact. honestly what i hate more is the constant step back jumper that him and curry started and is still going unfortunately to no end.

I think you're oversimplifying it

"do X right" has to be a feasible thing haha. You're telling me you can get 4-5 defenders to time the snap count right all at the same time? The probability of that happening without an offsides or a neutral zone infraction has got to be a fraction of 1%
