They're my favorite band and I do not think they have great lyrics. They have good lyrics that work great in the context of their songs. But from a pure lyrical or literary point of view? They're not great.

 

Their most “poetic” and mature lyrics are on Dude Ranch

 

And here I am just glad that so far it doesn't look like we have a "[Teenage Age] and a [noun] basket" lyric from Tom.

Like I know there are some very meaningful lyrics throughout their discography, but this is also the band who had me screaming "shit piss fuck **** cocksucker motherfucker tits fart turd and twat" at the top of my lungs as a 35 year old this summer.

I think it's ridiculous to cherry pick their obviously less-thought-out or jokey lyrics and using that as proof they've never written anything "great."

I also think it's a pretty subjective thing anyway. Lyrics don't have to be deep or poetic to be good/great.

 

Compared to the lyrics I’d put in a S-tier, Blink’s not close. I like plenty of blink songs better than I like some of the best lyrics written. But purely judging the lyrics, they’re just not on the same level of where others get to.

It's subjective.

 

If you think it’s subjective than why argue about it? My “not great lyrics but great songs” opinion would be unworthy of response if it’s 100% subjective.

While personal preferences will always play a role in how individuals perceive and appreciate writing, theres definitely objective criteria that can provide a foundation for more structured and less subjective evaluations of lyrics or written works. (Clive, Beardsley, Danto, Scruton, and a bunch of other aesthetic authors and philosophers go into much detail, it’s been debated to death at this point.)
