I would consider that Jordan love in his 4th start ever is missing his RB1 his WR1 and his all pro LT and LG led a 17 point comeback against one of the best defenses in the league

His young WR also dropped a ton of easy catches too

He hasn’t been bad at all this season

 

He’s a stud - had some big drops week 3 but also had an insane diving catch on the final drive

very excited about his potential

Exactly. Which is why you have to take several of them and appropriately weigh them against each other in context. Which I trust a human who watches the games, and has context, to do more appropriately than a one size fits all conglomerate stat that may or may not be based on faulty formulaic reasoning

That post didn't do that though. Nor did it have anything to do with watching a game. Nor is advanced stats a "one sized fits all conglomerate based on faulty formulaic reasoning".

 

Saint were up 17-0 in the 3rd until Carr was hurt. Maybe the end would've been the same but I highly doubt it.

I’ve seen average performance earn a high EPA and good performance earn a low EPA. I’ve seen DVOA value certain styles of play and coaching more than others, particularly when it comes to teams that keep games close and gut out victories - sometimes those teams are the best ones and that stat is like “BUT THEY DIDNT DOMINATE THOUGH”. Etc. I could spin off more examples but you get the point. It’s like PFF grades. Sure sometimes they’re good. Sometimes, though, the grader might be grading the wrong thing and not seeing all the context of the play.

For some things there are effective metrics. Like, I do think if you have a PFF team you can do things like, quantify how many sacks and hurries were due to blown blocking within 3 seconds etc and try to have a metric for pocket presence or something specific like that. But when it comes to summing up somebody’s whole game, at some point you simply can’t factor EVERYTHING in to one number, all the individual stats and numbers mean something slightly different depending on how that team tends to strategize that player and what their supporting cast looks like.
