I honestly prefer Will to DBM/Deathstar Mess. I would've loved an all Kurt album though.

I don't ever personally enjoy Will's yells or raps. Always felt forced.

Will's vocals on Happiness are infinitely better than Jon's on the first two albums.

Yeah, Mess was a really bad on the first two albums. I'd take DBMII and foward Mess over Will. But, DBM/Deathstar Mess was a lot worse than Will was on Happiness.

Definitely got better personally, but Will's parts are so unbelievably forgettable and out of place. They don't top anything Jon ever wrote for me, and generally get skipped over.

I'm currently learning Deception on guitar and jesus fucking christ this song is ridiculous! Possibly the most technical they've ever done I think. There's so much tapping across this album too - I'd say that's the technique that characterises the guitar on this one (DBM = tremolo picking, Happiness = those choppy/scratchy indie dead notes or whatever, DBM2 = hella slides! lol)

can we all agree current Mess has some of the best sounding screams to come out of this scene? a bit monotonous, but that sound is terrific.

    mess sounded good on deathstar

I feel like will should've realized by now that his contributions are worse than shit and ruin entire songs

his screams on happiness were fine though

Not with this song, no - too hard! This guy does incredible DGD covers and he's working through this whole new album with tutorials for every song!

Are any of you guys A Lot Like Birds fans? Keep it hush hush but I heard some of their new stuff a few days ago in the car with a friend who knows the band... I'll just say it's phenomenal, definitely a new direction for them but fans of DGD should LOVE it. Ironically as big of a Kurt fan as I am, their best stuff seems to be after he left.

I could never get into A Lot Like Birds cause I found their song structure hard to follow and it didn't hold me. If this is different for them though, I'm totally willing to give them a second chance.

Is it super chill like the Alone stuff like Kurt mentioned it being?

I think there's a good chance you'll LOVE this... definitely a change of pace while still being post-hardcore. They took the best elements of their atmosphere and emotional intensity, and went in a more melodic, accessible direction. Almost no screams to be found in anything I heard. Cory and the newest member Matt Coate are both excellent singers and their voices compliment each other perfectly.

This was my biggest worry as well, and I'm happy to report it sounds exactly nothing like Alone. Honestly my first thought is that Kurt would sound PHENOMENAL with this new sound, which leads me to believe it was possibly more personality conflicts than musical differences that led to his departure. It's very much still post-hardcore, and still feels like ALLB while moving consciously in a more melodic direction. It's honestly phenomenal.

Yeah, that's weird. I might check it out. Kurt was my favorite aspect of the band though so I don't know how I'll feel in the end. No Place is one of my favorite albums in the genre I think.

He was mine too... honestly Matt Coate is a great singer and Cory really shines as well, trust me I was very surprised as well at how much I loved them without Kurt. I fully expect this album to be the biggest surprise of next year in this genre.

Ever since they were talking about Cory taking over clean vocals with the new bassist I was super excited to hear what they came up with.

What I heard was excellent! I only got to hear some tracks once so I can't wait to be able to hear them again.

Yeah, Cory sings now and their new bassist also sings.
