ALL THREE of Justin Fields reads in this single progression / play call were open for a QB with even an average sense of timing and anticipation. Strategy Description below if anyone wants it.

Fields did none of these things.

It is very concerning that the goal of this play worked to perfection and Fields STILL held the ball. I mean that is one nice throw away from a 30 yard TD that is on the highlight reel, neither DB would’ve caught him if he was led properly. But if Fields isn’t actually reading the play (and he clearly isn’t if he didn’t know that seam was gonna have a good chance to be open)… why the fuck didn’t he at least take the easier yards from one of the other routes, or run early when he had space? Like, take the easy answer bro. Just take the yards if you don’t know what the coverage is and what the point of the play is.

He’s got the ball a good 5+ seconds on this play. Holding the ball this long is very dumb in the NFL if you’re not actually planning something ahead of time. He waited till all 3 WRs got covered, then waited until the pocket closed, and THEN tried to take off. Absolutely pathetic speed of processing for a third year QB, I don’t care what his supporting cast is, this is an example of a PERFECTLY executed situation to at least get a first down, where Fields totally failed by himself. This is exactly my issue with him as a passer in a nutshell.

Not to mention, the fact Stroud (another Ohio State QB I was actually high on) had a 300 yard passing game in week 2 of year 1 with basically 0 good receivers and FOUR offensive linemen injured… while Fields still hasn’t had a 300 yard game yet… PROVES it can’t just be explained away with “Fields supporting cast sucks” and also illustrates I am not helmet scouting and I actually am seeing this shit on tape. Just saying.
