Imo, self-checkout is a dope option but should have an item limit and not be a replacement for cashiers.

 

GM bought 5 BILLION dollars worth of their stocks last year, they can get fucked with this poor is me message.

 

Right, but they don't have to do that. They could simply take less profit. As many have said before, if your business model relies on you not paying your workers a living wage, or not paying a sufficient number of workers to run your business properly, it's your business model that's broken.

 

They made $22 billion in profit last year and have about 45000 UAW workers. Even if they gave each worker an $80,000 per year raise they would still make nearly $17.5 billion in profit.

 

The thing that breaks all of these dumbass arguments is Costco. They treat and pay their employees extremely well, offer good benefits and their costs are not in any measurable way different from what their competitors are.

 

I still remember the earnings call for Costco, where this Wall Street pariah was encouraging them to raise the cost of their fresh food goods like everyone else and their CFO being like no, we are not going to do that. I don't corporate simp but at least they don't put up with bullshit like that.

I agree. Probably not the best quote to illustrate the article. Unfortunately no business will ever willingly take less profit, at least not a publicly traded one. Which is the issue with shareholders to begin with. They'll gladly allow the experience to get worse and worse as long as the stock value continues to grow because, hey, they aren't shopping there.

Fuck GM…my dad was a non-union worker at a plant for 15yrs. He was a line supervisor (not allowed to be part of UAW) and the shit he had to deal with at that job (consistent 75hr works weeks) brought on a stroke and left him paralyzed by 62.

 

Self check outs are great. I have saved an unquantifiable amount of time using them. I also ensure my bags are packed they way I want them to be. It’s a lot faster than waiting in line. I think stores should still offer manned registers. But I can’t count the times a manned register has multiple people in line and nobody in the self checkout. They don’t need to pay me because time is money and I have saved so so much time. Having an employee nearby for issues or age restricted items is good.

I also don’t buy a ton at once. If I was always doing a fully loaded cart, going to a manned register is easier. I am a quick efficient shopper and self check outs have only made it easier to do so.

Totally agree. My massive Walmart only ever has 1-2 cashiers now and expect everyone to self checkout. Insane.

As someone who works 2 min from Costco and constantly goes in there for just 1-3 items per trip, I highly prefer the self-checkout. No sense in waiting in lines behind people who have 100 things in their cart when I just in to grab toilet paper and toothpaste LOL. I actually didn't enjoy shopping at Costco until they added self-checkout. And since they look at all receipts anyways, the receipt-checking part isn't an added nuisance.

 

People who think self-checkout is dope aren’t putting two and two together that the same efficiency can be accomplished by having more employees on staff, instead of cutting jobs and expecting you to do the labor for the corporation…
