  1. I don't know if I'd consider him part of the scene but finding out Ian Kirkpatrick produced Stacy Clark's first album (indie pop/electronica artist discovered on ap.net's Absolute 100 feature back in the day) that I had been listening to for a decade at that point, and that it was his first ever production credits blew my mind. Dude went on to such bigger things.

That song featured Aaron Marsh as well

I thought her first album was pretty good for what it was (I am definitely not the target audience) but this was actually pretty damn good, I LOVE that she is exposing this younger generation to this kind of music and I hope it drives them to check it out more

39 minutes is a perfect run time for an album

In no way is 39 minutes a short album, any sane person can simply look at the history of recorded music

If you can track down the 4 vinyl bonus tracks, it'll be closer to 50 min

12 songs that are all basically 3 minutes and change totaling 39 minutes is basically what you would expect if you knew how math worked.

I saw this exchange and had to roll my eyes. I enjoy his Taylor Swift podcast, but some of his takes seem super silly to me, this one included. If anything, this album seems short because the current era includes so many extremely bloated "data dump" albums, including the album that will very easily end the year as 2023's top performer. If TikTok lead us back to more reasonable-length albums, I'm totally ok with that! But I don't think I see much evidence of that trend yet.

  16. Hahaha weird. Almost every album is around the 40 min mark.

It’s like some people have never burned CDs before. It was always the best when you could fit 2 albums on 1 80 min disc perfectly. And even better when you could squeeze on 2-5 other random songs.

  17. What does album length have to do with TikTok anyway? Isn't the TikTokization of music people releasing singles, lots of singles, and sometimes never even putting any album together?

You're doing too much thinking. TikToks are short so music is short now duh

Very few albums need to be more than 40-45 minutes. Unless you're great at sequencing or in the hot-streak part of your career it'll likely drag.

Wanted to listen to this over the weekend before I compared it to SOUR. Overall

    SOUR: better down-tempo songs
    GUTS: better up-tempo songs

None of the songs are messes and this would have been a great summer album if it was released in May.

‘Pretty Isn’t Pretty’ is my favorite but it also sounds more polished than the rest of her songs? I can’t put my finger on it but something about it is different. Whenever it comes on it feels like it can exist on an album solely with that sound.

If anything it’s about the length of the individual songs themselves and how quickly you get to a chorus. PinkPantheress is a good example of an artist whose music length and structure feels influenced by this trend.
