  1. Sure pal, you can go listen to the phone call where 2 American diplomats choose who will make up the post-Maidan government in Ukraine, but yeah, it was organic.

You are the only one using the word justified. I do not believe that you don't understand that I'm not making an argument that anything is justified. But just in case anyone else reading does think that, lets try to use an economic analogy - we know layoffs are going to happen under certain conditions because we live in a capitalist world where firms compete to extract profit. Firms can make decisions about hiring and structure and investment that can prepare them for bad times and mitigate the conditions that would create layoffs. They can also make decisions that exasperate those conditions.

Geopolitically, we know wars are going to happen under certain conditions because we live in a capitalist and imperialist world where nation states and diplomatic blocs compete for resources and prestige. Polities can make foreign policy decisions that can mitigate the conditions that create war. They can also make decisions that create those conditions.

I'm not into economics nearly as much as geopolitics so I can only say that I don't *think* firms would have any reason to purposely create the conditions for layoffs. But that's certainly not true for polities and wars.

  2. "Texas" barely had any Europeans in it when Ukraine was first annexed into the Russian empire. Ukraine is not part of Russia but Russia had considered it such for 150 years while Texas was still part of Mexico. It's actually a pretty decent analogy that does not at all imply what you say here. Frankly, by the same right Ukraine should be independent, Texas should be part of Mexico.

  3. If you want we could go further back like what if the US had lost the 1914 war with Mexico because of a revolution at home and had given Mexico Texas as part of the peace but then like idk I guess Colombia kept fighting Mexico and won and forced them to make Texas independent and then the American revolutionaries re-invaded texas and then China destroyed the revolution and looted the country and Texas became independent again and then everything else I said happened? I don't think this is useful at this point personally but whatever

Oh I don’t doubt for a second that the US def had influence over who took over the govt—a massive protest to overthrow a pro-Russian govt just happened, the US knows this means they can heavily influence who gets picked for the new govt because, presumably, said people want a pro-western govt. so pick the folks that we want running it if you want those closer ties and our support. That’s different than saying the US overthrew the govt.

and since you don’t like the word “justify” (which I think the folks on your side should probably question how well you’re explaining your points and presenting your side of things if the folks you’re talking to seem to keep getting the idea that you’re looking to justify Russia’s actions), let me put it another way:

I certainly understand why Russia invaded Ukraine. Like, I understand all the reasons why they’re doing it and why they’re saying they’re doing it. Just like I would understand why the US would invade Mexico in such a scenario. But understanding the history and geopolitics of why it happened doesn’t mean I’m gonna be sitting there saying “Welp, if only China hadn’t been pressuring Mexico to be more friendly with them, none of this would be happening. Plus Mexico has nationalists fighting for them. Why would anyone support Mexico right now? Why should we be supporting Mexicans fighting the invaders? Etc etc etc.”. Like, the US would still be wrong for taking the actions they were, and they should leave the country immediately, and that would pretty much be my #1 point and priority in terms of rhetoric and protest and etc.

No, I just know where you stand and where I stand.

I find any form of troop invasion wrong and those who actively choose to invade as the fucking bad guys.

You think there’s wiggle room for invaders to be bad guys. Every damn invader in history has had their “reasons” and it’s all bullshit. Those that send troops to invade another nation can get fucked off of this planet. No room for it.

My version would have more of a twist where it’s Taiwan, Israel, and Canada invading the US. The US wouldn’t see its vassal states coming.
