“Loaning” is just code for “leasing” her jet out to other rich people who would just rent out a different jet if they weren’t using hers.

Which, btw, is something she could be doing herself to make her numbers look better! We would have no idea!

I just have trouble reconciling why it’s so immoral for Taylor to fly private for the biggest economy boosting tour of all time but it’s not immoral for me to take up a commercial plane ticket so I can go to Vegas and black out which I can do in my house with no impact to the environment. Like, where does it end? Why aren’t we banning all recreational travel? It just hurts my brain to think about lol

Same goes for her relatives. Her mom is treated like that often too.

Drawing a line at private air travel sits fine with me for now. Comparing to rich people and celebrities, it’s not immoral for commercial passengers to fly commercial. For the people utilizing the service, private transport carbon emissions are astronomical compared to commercial.

I think it’d be cheaper to fly commercial and wear a wig / prosthetic tbh

that’s a different dystopian future but more ethical on a personal level

Comparing Taylor Swift flying all over the country on her private jets to a regular person taking a vacation on a commercial flight is just silly.

Isn’t Taylor literally in the air within 20 min of walking off stage on the last date of each city?

What’s the carbon footprint of 1 stadium show compared to a private jet trip?

This is also what I have trouble with. What is the combined carbon footprint of everyone who went to that show vs. Taylor’s PJ? Why is one okay but not the other?

While I do believe we all have some personal responsibility in this matter, Taylor Swift's family flying commercial would have no impact on our current climate crisis. Neither would Taylor traveling the tour by an electric-powered vehicle.

Maybe her setting an example would have a trickle down effect to other individuals, but there's no hope of reversing climate change without a massive systematic change in regards to major oil/fossil fuel companies and those that empower them.

I know this is the Accountability in Music thread, so I don't mean to derail anything, and I do think it's great that people are passionate about the climate crisis and are talking about this stuff, but it just seems off mark of the very large and very important root issues.

I think reducing private air travel significantly if not outright banning it is treating a root cause of climate change, which applies beyond Taylor Swift specifically. I don’t expect “accountability” in any way. But her private plane usage is showing people a real example of the impact one rich person can have on carbon emissions, which is why it’s worth noting imo. That’s all.

Taylor is so famous that I feel like her travel logistics, just for her safety, have to be up there with the president.

i read that when all is said and done, her estimated profit from this tour will be around the $800m mark, after paying everything and every one. so, yeah, that'll earn her a nice place in the Tres Commas club.

Aren't carbon credits pretty much useless in real terms. I mean, I'm pretty sure buying them doesn't grant a pass to just continue to do fucked up things to the environment.

In the grand scheme of things though, Taylor is absolutely nothing compared to Shell, Exon, etc. Blaming Taylor or any other celebrity is really missing that we should be pressuring politicians who do nothing and companies who are destroying the environment and then making adverts about how they are protecting it.
