nah that’s not good. Small scale shoplifting is whatever and doesn’t matter but shit like this causes stores to abandon neighborhoods and increases support for reactionary “tough on crime” policies

Doesn’t that make sense? Tech bro middle aged republicans like Trump’s policies so it makes sense they would gravitate toward someone who holds those policies but is a measured speaker.

“Sorry I didn’t protect you. I was at an advanced screening of Hardball with Keanu Reeves. Did you ever see that movie? Of course you didn’t, you were dead already. Oh my god, I’m so sorry, that was insensitive. I’m learning a lot today, like the fact that when buildings die they go to heaven. Very strange. Anyway, this little kid on the baseball team dies in that movie and the whole team sings Big Poppa by Notorious B.I.G. Because that was his favorite song and it’s so goddamn sad. I’ll introduce you to Biggie, he’s here too because I didn’t save him either. Hey you know something, holding you like this makes me feel like a Kaiju.”

“Look out, I’m gonna destroy you again! Ha ha ha, again I do apologize. I make jokes when I am uncomfortable.”

Saw a guy with a dumb ass modded Bronco with a giant sticker on the back windshield that says “Soros owns Colorado.” Kinda wish I could have pulled up next to him to ask him what he thinks that even means

There's no way we have lockdowns again, so if Covid does come back with a strong variant the bodies are gonna stack up real high.

Lol the site is still "twitter.com". Even if you go to "x.com" you still get redirected to "twttier.com". until that changes, it'll still be twitter.

Seconded. I don't believe we'll ever see a united response to a pandemic like that again. The politicization of that was the worst thing that could've happened, and will ensure nothing gets in the way of capitalism running full steam ahead next time this happens.

I'm scared AF about bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that have been dormant for thousands of years coming back due to permafrost thaw. COVID-19 will be a blip compared to the damage some of these pathogens could do to the world.

Can't speak for future viruses and diseases cause who knows what there could end up being, but I really don't foresee there ever being a good reason to do "lockdowns" again for covid-19. We have the vaccines developed that are pretty effective at stopping severe cases and death, hopefully with updated ones widely available later this year, and we're far enough along where we have treatments like paxlovid for those at a higher risk for severe cases.

I think for the United States at least, we wouldn't even do a lockdown for something even deadlier than COVID-19 in the future unless there are MAJOR changes with the country from where we are right now. The politicization of the COVID-19 response broke our fucking country. There would maybe be localized areas that attempt to do reasonable, safe responses, but given how these things work that is not likely to be very effective at all.

So, should I do the new loan thing? I logged into my account and it doesn’t tell me what my monthly payment should be.

yeah the problem is going to be when the next virus hits. and another series of lockdowns would buy us time to develop a vaccine and save many lives but enough of society will reject the idea and so it'll be no where near as effective

basically in the same way viruses evolve to become more resistant to vaccines, society has revolved to become more resistant to societal cures.

If you described to me back in 2019 / early 2020 how the US response to the pandemic ultimately played out, I never would have believed you. Not in a million years. I still can't quite believe it now having lived through it. Fucking insanity.

I hope they stack up high enough to eliminate the chaff and leave reasonable, united humans as the wheat.

It’s impossible to say how people who are immunocompromised would deal with a society that doesn’t deal with their condition, but we already don’t. If we are going through hell again, be it COVID or the next worst thing, I hope it spreads like a cleansing flood on those who reject science, empathy and solidarity with their fellow human.

That sounds cold but I feel confident in saying it. Eliminating as many of them as possible through natural selection is a path nature takes in every other way. Without as many brain dead mutants in America rooting for (and voting for) our current ghoul congress, it would be easier for reasonable folks to be elected and to make progress on issues that matter and aren’t caused by ignorance, stupidity or outright malice.

My kids are gonna have to grow up in the hellscape they’re sowing for us right now. I’m fucking done rooting for things smaller than death for those folks.

Unfortunately viruses don’t spare people because they’re reasonable. If there aren’t societal-wide measures most reasonable people will be unable to avoid infection, and those that would be able to would be extremely rich and privileged most likely. There would be nothing just or good about it. Literally almost everybody has been infected with covid even those that took it the most seriously. We’d all be dead if a virus that could just wipe people out came about.

I think people are underestimating how scared people can be and how dumb they are at the same time. People hear 1% and it doesn’t scare them because 1% is a low number and the “odds are low”, nevermind that 1% of the population is literally millions of people (this also goes back to my theory on how talking about climate change in terms of Celsius is a bad idea because most Americans hear 2-3 degrees warming and don’t think that’s that bad because they don’t realize that’s actually like 9 degrees Fahrenheit). But if some virus came along that was highly infectious and killing like 30% of the infected, people would be scared shitless and would stay inside WAY more even without the govt mandating it. All of sudden they’ve got a much higher chance of dying and the virus is everywhere? Yeah they’re gonna lose the tough guy persona very quickly
