One of my best friends is a pastor, so obviously we have different view points, though I never bring it up. I just texted him about the Circa tour.

If I can be friends with him I can enjoy Dustin's music.

It really takes a lot for me to not enjoy good art if it's good art. I used to write everything off but idk for me personally I try looking at everything at play

My personal line is at R. Kelly and Swans I think

I won't listen to anything they or artists who have been as heinous as them make anymore

But yeah I struggled with the Kanye debacle and said I wasn't gonna buy any of his stuff anymore and I'll probably fall back on that and be wrong

If I paid a lot of attention to whether the entertainer I like is a good person, i would hate football.

Idk, at some level you're just paying for a spectacle. Any product you buy from almost any nationwide American business has corruption in it somewhere. You just hope that the shitty ones won't try to actually have any political or financial gain strictly at the expense of other people. Or support rape culture or openly hate a minority group etc

i totally get not wanting to financially support someone for some things, im selective about what i actually purchase in the first place, but yeah its gotta be pretty fucking bad for me to say i wont even stream or illegally download their music. i dont consider streaming supporting at all since its a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a cent. but yeah its gotta be an r kelly type scenario for me to not even listen.

  8. Leftandleaving

I will be okay. everything Supporter

Left and Leaving isn't anywhere close to as energetic as the typical JM album though. It's got the two singles - Aside and Watermark - and then even the louder songs like Elegy and Exiles are more midtempo rock songs rather than punk tracks. I wouldn't consider almost any of RC to be driving. That's an indie rock album to me, not a (pop) punk one. (I never listened to YLT but I've been told I should)

I don't just say it because his voice is softer, I say it because I don't think they sound like a punk band like Joyce Manor does. They have pop punk songs, for sure, but even those I don't think come close to the feeling of a JM track, for the most part. I don't think Aside sounds particularly comparable to something like Constant Headache, for example. I think they're on different ends of the genre's spectrum

Agreed 100% (including about the streaming comment because that was something I wondered about for a bit but came to the same conclusion as you)

totally 100% respect anyone's decision not to listen to any artist for any reason, no matter how small. in return i just ask that i'm not attacked for what i choose to listen to. everyone has their own line, and that's totally cool.

My problem was I was raised Mormon so I was very selective with what I watched, listened to or consumed bc I thought I was morally superior or something and wouldn't support anything not "moral". So I missed out on a lot of stuff and don't want to make those stupid judgements anymore. That alone is a huge place of privilege and I recognize that. But yeah fuck R kelly

oh yeah i absolutely recognize my ability to listen to problematic artists often times stems from the fact that their comments/actions dont really affect me. but sometimes they do, in the case with dustin and his mars hill association or kerry mccoy being problematic on twitter four years ago, and i can look past it and still believe deep down they're good people

I always thought it was about Snowden lol, oops. Probably because Black Honey and Death from Above seem to be about our government so it had me in that state of mind.

I had to google Kerry McCoy because I don't know anything

But yeah I completely get it and also appreciate you staying friends with me despite the fact that I said some gross shit in the past and giving me that same belief

You're right that the Weakerthans are not always that, but let me rephrase - Joyce sounds more like the Weakerthans upbeat moments, specifically, than Jawbreaker. Either way Im glad we could agree on Alkaline Trio - which is a sound I would also say is on the opposite end of the punk spectrum from Jawbreaker.

yeah i think dustin tweeted once that it wasn't about snowden. definitely about his experience at mars hill (though you could definitely interpret it as being about snowden and it works perfectly)

    its about both
Thrice were supposed to be on hiatus. Why did they return so soon?

Tell us about the song Whistleblower – is that about Edward Snowden revealing government secrets?
“I definitely won’t say that it’s got nothing to do with Edward Snowden, but it’s definitely not just a song about Edward Snowden and that situation, which it seems like some people are grabbing onto and thinking I’m oversimplifying that situation. Which is not at all what I’m attempting to do, at least. I think there are many nuances to a situation like that where someone makes such a large decision that can affect so many people, but what I’m trying to get across in that song is this idea that there is…I’m trying to fight against the culture that automatically writes off whistleblowers and tries to defame them and shout them down and shame them, because that kind of culture is what keeps bad, evil and immoral practices going in companies and countries. There’s a huge pressure that people have to wrestle with to come to those decisions, to be like ‘There’s no other option for me now but to ignore something that’s weighing on my conscience or to do something drastic that I know I’m going to be slammed for.’ I have a lot of sympathy and empathy for someone like Snowden who happens to believe in making a choice that they think is the right choice even though it’s a really hard choice and there are big consequences. And it’s something that I personally had to wrestle with up in Washington."

ive said some of the grossest shit in the past as well, a lot of people have. we just have to confront our pasts and make sure we do the best we can going forward. which obviously you do, you're one of the best people i know

I grew up in Florida. Ive never held any hate in my heart for another human being, but i have said and believed some shitty things before I got a little more socially aware.

Being a product of your environment is a real thing... and we just have to challenge ourselves to eliminate any kind of incriminating bias that may seem ingrained in our hometown or family's culture.
