Of all the words you could use, boring is a weird one. If anything their music is exciting. Try Brother, Sister for size if you ever wanna give them another chance. The first 7 songs of the album especially are jams with excellent instrumentation and amazing lyrics.

 

The big one was probably Xiu Xiu, that's when I ultimately decided I was okay with not meeting people I liked the music of

And then when everything came out about Michael Gira it reinforced that thought tenfold and I just felt gross having even talked to him

 

admittedly the only albums by mwy i regularly listen to are brother sister and pale horses

 

I'll give em another shot just to see because I do want to like them since I respect them so much haha

 

interesting, ive only had positive experiences tbh but ive only really met like, ryan hemsworth once

 

oh and lil b, he signed the shirt i was wearing because i had nothing for him to sign

 

I've had a lot of positive experiences but a lot of negative ones as well haha, I think I just kinda like keeping the mystique there as far as an artist goes (as long as it's not a mystique of them being a complete scumbag like Gira)

I'm talking from the perspective of someone who doesn't want to get into them because of what they've heard about Kensrue's religious affiliations, not someone who listens to them and tries to get into them

I think it's a bit more accessible than the stuff before. Less breakneck punk sound. Songs like fireman and accident prone are a lot catchier than they'd done prior

 

my response to that person would be you shouldn't be so quick to write someone off based on what you know on the surface. explore further to figure out what they're all about. if you explore dustin's beliefs further you'll find he's not what you would expect from a typical evangelical.

If I'm told my reason for not listening to an artist is dumb then the last thing I want to do is listen to that artist

But if I'm told "Hey, there's another side to this and exploring further you'll learn these things..." then I'm much more inclined to give it a chance

 

OK but literally brushing someone off because of their religion, without exploring further, is a dumb reason, because it is judgmental and narrow minded. We can't just go ahead and assume "Person is religious, therefore they must be X Y Z" which is what SEEMS (correct me if I'm wrong) to be happening in here. At least Jake clarified nicely. I probably wouldn't have hahaha

 

thats how i interpreted it too so you're not wrong haha unless we're both wrong. but yeah i mean im as atheist as it gets and i absolutely love/appreciate/respect the hell out of so much music with religious themes.

 

I feel like there's more to it than that though. I agree with you that writing someone off for being religious is wrong. But with Dustin Kensrue, it's like "He's evangelical and supports a megachurch and their pastor who is known for committing fraud to his patrons and promoting very problematic beliefs alongside his faith." I think it has a lot to do with that affiliation alongside the religious beliefs. But maybe I'm wrong about that and he was just referring to Kensrue's faith, in which case I do agree with you.

 

Matt's the same way. He probably got less interested in Sufjan and Radiohead after I tried to advocate for them lol

 

My point was more about the lyrical content of the song.

 

he doesnt support them or mark discroll tho he was one of the seven leaders who resigned very publicly due to whatever was going on i forget all the details but he definitely bailed due to whatever was going on.

 

Also adding in that I love religious imagery and use it often. Regardless of my beliefs (which I won't delve into here) so much wonderful art in all forms has come from religion and I enjoy it.

This is news to me which makes me wonder if it'd be news to others who'd write Kensrue off, I genuinely didn't know Kensrue bailed on them
