Idk, not around here it wasn’t haha. I only remember hearing it a few times on pop radio around here, and it disappeared quickly.

our Philly alt rock station still plays royals and team though haha

Hate to tell to you a song’s popularity isn’t based on how many times you heard it

the album after that one may be a better argument

well yeah I’m just saying the 2nd one’s lead single didn’t appear to have the sticking around power the first did, and it was a bit of a style change from the first ones singles. Not sure why that was, different times or what. I like that song haha

but yeah def her third album is waaaaay different from the songs I’ve listened to

I feel like olivia and lorde may be similar in the fact that neither seem interested in being super famous? Like obv they're famous but I think they both could've chased the fame thing harder after massive debuts but didn't seem to work themselves ragged to stay in the public eye which is refreshing.

Were "Tennis Court" and "Team" that big? I remember "Royals" being inescapable, but it seemed like the only song from that album I ever encountered out in the wild. Heard "Green Light" a ton, though. (IMO, Melodrama is way better than the debut.)

The album just seems unkillable, though. It'll be back on top in a week or two. "Vampire" knocking "Last Night" off the pedestal could be permanent! (And hopefully so, because I don't want that thing breaking the record.)

oh god yeah team was huuuuge around here. That shit got played alllllll the time. Tennis Court was less so, I remember that getting some play for a while and then it kinda went back to Royals and Teams haha

Yeah notice she's not attached to any movies since blowing up, despite having an acting resume? Seems like she just wants to make good music, and amen to that.

I think Olivia has more of an inclination to be famous. She was a child actor and has friends in both the music industry and Hollywood. I just think Olivia cares about her craft and her artistry the same way Lorde does, which is why neither of them rushed out music before they were ready.

Lorde had a massive first single ("Royals") like Olivia did ("Driver's License") but that's where the similarities end. Olivia kept building her staying power with each single while Lorde's other singles never caught on quite as much as "Royals". Then the second album was much different (though critically acclaimed), then she took a ton of time off and came back with an album that was just okay and forgettable.

"Royals" changed the sound of pop music in ways that you still hear today (including this Olivia Rodrigo song). Nothing she ever released next was going to be "Royals" big.

That said, while "Green Light" was culturally significant (and Melodrama is one of the ten best albums of that decade in my mind), it certainly did not achieve the commercial ambitions that others might have had for it. It peaked at 19 on the Hot 100 and 20 on the UK charts, which would have been disappointing for the label.

So does the new single acknowledge creep or is it just a lawsuit waiting to happen? On a local radio show they did the call in to the number where she was teasing the song and it played the beginning chords, and immediately the whole show was saying it sounded familiar and opened up the phone lines for people to say what the song was. It was unanimously creep by radiohead that people called in with.

The chord progression in the new song Vampire sounds extremely close to Creep by Radiohead and considering on the last album, they had to give writing credit to Hailey, I am wondering if something similar will end up happening here or if it's a stretch that I hear the similarities. I brought up the radio show to back up that multiple people were saying that instantly from the chord progression. It only took me a few seconds to tie the songs together.

EDIT: To clarify, she (Olivia) had a number that if you called in, it teased the new single by playing the piano chords at the beginning, and the whole radio show said 'wait, isn't this already a song?' but they couldn't place it so they opened up the phone lines for people to call in and say what they heard. Multiple callers said 'creep' including myself (thought I didn't actually call in but that was immediately what I heard).

She didn’t “have” to give writing credit to Hayley Williams. The label pulled that as a precaution that they didn’t even need to take. You can’t copyright a chord progression. It’s part of a really troubling trend in potentially limiting artists and their creativity. There’s an infinite number of chord progressions. Songs are gonna share them from now until the end of time

I agree. I understand that there are plenty of songs that sound like others and the whole Ed Sheeran lawsuit based on trying to copyright a typical four chord progression. This is a little different to me as I think Creep is a pretty unique song (at least in feel) so to be evoked within seconds made this one stand out, but I agree with your sentiments. I liked her last album so not hating or being dismissive of this song, was just more curious if it was an outlier to hear the connection or blatantly obvious.

I would never in a million years have connected this song to “Creep.” I don’t hear that comparison in the slightest.

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

I would say a majority of these comparisons are either from estate owners who are trying to cash in on masters they own (Ed Sheeran case) or people who are musically inexperienced to the point where they draw conclusions on vague similarities (ooooh the song has minor chords it sounds like X)

if someone said it sounds a little bit like some song by ‘as tall as lions’ I’d concur

not saying you’re musically inexperienced btw, just that the pop size of callers to a radio show may be limited at best
