Just because it won’t succeed doesn’t mean it’s not a symptom of an artistic medium having all the life drained out of it. I think I’ll like Barbie and happily buy a ticket to anything Greta Gerwig does, but it’s very clearly a hypercapitalist ad being served as a film, like a growing (and growing) number of mainstream American movies are now and will continue to be.

Part of the reason a Barbie movie like this works at least on a conceptual level isn't just that Gerwig is involved (though that does help give people hope that it will actually be done well), but also because Barbie is such a monumentally giant part of American culture. Outside of video games, how many kids toys have been politicized as much as Barbie? Other kids products like Barney or Polly Pocket simply cannot compare, they're just millennial nostalgia

Why wouldn't Mattel films succeed? They've made whole franchises on theme park rides.

Ah this seems like a good thing. Publications bending to criticism of Zaslav.

Didn't they try this with the board game cinematic universe with battleship and it flopped

I liked White Noise, it can’t translate the novel’s specific greatness without Delillo’s writing but it was a solid adaptation.

I honestly just don't understand the mass excitement for Barbie, it looks so godawful and is a barbie movie....

I don't know if there is a term for it, but having something go so far in the ironic direction that it becomes un-ironic is a very real thing with Gen Z. A mainstream Barbie movie is at it's base, obviously terrible, but when Greta Gerwig comes on board, it makes film nerds lose their minds because like "LOL why would she do a movie like this!!" but then also, it makes them come on board because it's so ridiculous but then it crosses a line somewhere that people legitimately are excited for it. I don't know what the terminology is for the phenomenon but it's wild.

I have seen, and love, all her movies... but this movie looks absolutely fucking terrible, maybe I need to be more into meme culture or something

I’m trying to view Gerwig’s Narnia as “the filmmaker behind Little Women & Lady Bird applies her creative voice to a series of beloved children’s fantasy books.”

Wording it that way sounds much better than “a talented filmmaker immediately follows up a movie about a toy brand with multiple films for a Netflix franchise,” lol.

You aren't wrong. If the director was Colin Trevorrow the responses to the trailers would be very different.

Almost like Gerwig has a better track record than Trevorrow?

Just watched The VVitch and we were pretty surprised that it wasn't really scary at all? I went into this kicking and screaming because I hate horror but my fiance loves it, but I was totally fine
