But Netflix won't give her movies a meaningful theatrical release if Glass Onion is anything to go off of. Greta deserves her movies to be seen on the big screen.

 

I just feel so conflicted about Gerwig going right from Barbie to a Netflix Narnia, and then right to a second Netflix Narnia.

The director behind Little Women taking that nostalgic series and giving it a fresh spin could be neat, though. If this is what she wants to spend her time on, hopefully she makes something really cool with it.

 

The thing is there really aren't big studio directors anymore, other than the AARP directors from a different era. The Russo Brothers made one of the biggest movies of all time but their other films have been completely dismissed.

It looks like she was given a lot of creative freedom with Barbie but that is the exception to the rule.

 

The difference is the Russo brothers have made nothing but streaming slop post MCU. Gerwig is an actual once in a generation talent rather than a sitcom director embracing A.I. storytelling (the russos)

I'd like to think if Barbie hits it big, Gerwig can get a deal similar to Jordan Peele at one of the big studios.

 

Movies being bad haven't stopped them from making money in the past. The director is increasingly anonymous in these studio films.

Which ones were bad? I haven’t LOVED any of the huge ones, but they were fine and enjoyable. My spectrum of bad to good is pretty wide.

 

Fast X, The Little Mermaid, The Flash, Transformers, Elemental and Indy 5 all seem like they are big money losers that also were not warmly received by audiences. Guardians 3 and Spider-Verse both got great reviews, audience reception and ended up being hits.

Good and bad is subjective of course.

 

These movies are being seen and making money, but they're such CGI-fests that the budgets of them are so comically large that they basically need half a billion box office to break even.

 

Yea if the budgets weren’t insane they’d be profitable.

 

Okay, of those 6, I’ve only seen The Flash and Indy. And I think they were good, not great, but enjoyable. I still need to see Transformers. Will likely skip the other three. I don’t consider audience reception into my opinion on movies (at least consciously). I think both movies were over hated, but whatever, my enjoyment remains the same. They may bomb, but that also won’t sway my opinion. If anything, bombing helps me lower expectations, so maybe box office can affect my opinion. Or it just allows me to go in wanting to see what story the movie wants to tell and not get overhyped. I dunno.

GOTG 3 and Spider-Verse 2 were great.
