Not to defend Tyreek Hill, but am I wrong in this instance being a “slap upside the head”?

Herb’s tape shows off his arm more for sure

Herb also holds the ball longer and takes more risks while Trevor is catching defenses out of position with early reads

different play styles definitely are illustrated here. I do think Herb has more “wow factor” but it’s also only Trevor’s year 2, we’ll see how things develop as he continues to get more confident.

I’ll also say that while Herb is clearly amazing at throwing the ball into traffic to an extent that Trevor hasn’t shown yet, Trevor has those sideline throws in particular DOWN. the TD to Engram vs TEN and the game winning TD to Marvin Jones vs BAL are 10/10 throws, borderline undefendable but at the same time they couldn’t be an inch off from where they were placed.





Also wanna say this: the hate on LAC’s line is overblown. Maybe it was more true before but in this 2022 film I’m seeing good blocking kinda undermined by risky pocket decisions. Herb does it to himself because he wants to REALLY stretch the field. He’s not content with an early 25 yard throw, he wants to wait and throw it 40 lol.

Though, just to be totally fair, here’s one huge thing that could be a factor - he’s probably seeing more man to man coverage than Lawrence is because his receivers don’t have speed. Which means he has to wait longer for separation naturally; but also means he can take more risks because DBs backs are turned. That’s my theory from a strategy perspective.

 

Herb is really good at like - throwing passes he shouldn’t, but knowing he can get away with it because that defender isn’t gonna turn around in time lol.

He definitely fits the ball into some silly small windows, and the receivers being good at high pointing the ball / doing that 360 back shoulder jump definitely helps, the only receiver Trev has who can do that is Evan Engram. But these are plays where like, Herbert is clearly picking on defenders who aren’t gonna be smart / aware enough to find the football even if it literally whizzes by their ear, and that’s an intelligence / skill all on its own.

Herbert’s style is like, shit I gotta cover my ass off even if it’s 40 yards downfield because he WILL try me and he IS still capable of being laser accurate and throwing bullets from that distance. Trevor’s style is more like, he sees creases in the coverage so early that the defender doesn’t even realize he made a mistake until the ball is already there lol
