The Variety article for this premiere that described the response as a “lukewarm 5-minute standing ovation” is still the funniest thing I’ve read in a minute

Haven’t read through the thread yet. I saw Raiders about 15 years ago before Crystal Skull came out but I never followed up with the rest. So I’ve been on a big Harrison Ford kick and decided to give these a try again. Something just isn’t grabbing me though. I’m currently watching Crystal Skull now and just saw the infamous nuking of the fridge and I gotta say…. What was all the outrage about? I mean it’s no more ridiculous that a lot of the other ways he’s escaped death in the previous movies. Either way, I wanna see Dial of Destiny just because who knows how much longer Harrison Ford will be in things and I’ve read a couple of interviews and he’s sold me.

In terms of the nuking the fridge scene outrage - 2000s nerd culture was bad. It was bad in the 2010s too, and still is now. But it was a different flavor of bad. I do remember hating it at the time and taking me out of the movie but it’s whatever in the grand scheme of things.

I think one of the bigger offenses of Crystal Skull is the overreliance on bad CG for its set pieces. If I recall, I remember that movie being hyped up for being a throwback to an earlier time where everything was practical. I was shocked to see stuff like the Tarzan swinging scene on opening night.

the tarzan swinging was way more upsetting to me than the fridge nuking when I saw it in theaters

The series was never rooted in 100% reality. End of Raiders saw spirits come out and melted peoples faces. In Temple of Doom the guy rips a still-beating heart out of some poor soul with his hand.

the CGI is what kills that movie for me but I still think it's mostly fun

The late 90's to early 2000's is a wasteland of bad CGI. Unfortunately it was replaced by bad 3D until people began to come to their senses.

    Fight the long defeat.

Absolutely, 3D was a colossal waste of effort that rarely if ever benefitted a movie. If anything, it incentivized contrived shots for novelty rather than storytelling value (thinking of every time a ship of some kind crash landed, with its nose screeching out of the screen directly at the audience).

So glad that trend is largely behind us these days.

The only 2 movies worth seeing in 3D are both avatar movies. Everything else was trash.

The first Ant-Man wasn’t too bad in 3D. But I think that’s the only one I sort of liked. Most 3D is trash.

The trailers before Avatar were the first 3D things I saw since the first Avatar and they made me nauseous (and I never get motion sickness). Probably the shitty conversions

Good guy, but a bad dude

I still think the nuke scene was cool as hell. The Tarzan bit, the driving over the waterfalls? That was fucking bad.

The Avatar movies and Jackass 3D are the only good 3D movies. Also, Gravity was pretty cool in 3D

I do think it was a little jarring to audiences that saw 3 movies that paid homage to 1930s adventure serials to unexpectedly be thrown into an homage of sci-fi B movies. I think I need to give Crystal Skull another shot and watch it through that lens and let go of the nostalgia a little.

Crystal Skull came out at the perfect time. The next year the Plinkett videos started coming out and the milder criticisms of the prequels became so much more vitriolic.

My kids love Crystal Skull. The CGI sucks but there’s a lot of fun set pieces.

Their favorite is still Last Crusade because I’m raising them right.
