Also this episode might have gotten me into Echo & The Bunnymen. That song ruled.

It's their biggest song, and the only one I know, but it's dope. The Nouvelle Vague cover they used is also great, I can vouch for all that band's albums (mostly all kickass covers)

Man, I for sure thought from the cast interviews and just the episode in general that Callie was gonna end up dead. Definitely heartless to pin it on an overdose but I'd imagine their thinking is that it's the tragedy of it all. Nat finally wants to live as an adult and then it's done. Wouldn't necessarily say I agree, just assuming that's where the writers' heads were.

Absolutely bone chilling stuff from Liv Hewson, especially the conversation with Travis about not feeling bad or ashamed. Young cast was phenomenal this season

I think the show could use to employ silence or just the score instead of some of these needle drops. Not the most prestigious example, but the first Hunger Games had most of, if not the entire sequence with the tributes being chosen completely scoreless and it was really effective in making you sit with the discomfort of the moment. I think a show like this would really benefit from that. This episode especially. Travis seeing Javi's dead body really didn't need Zombie laying over it.

Yeah this really bothered me. Natalie’s been my favorite character from the start (although Van gives her a run for her money) and I love Juliette in basically everything she’s in so her performance wasn’t a distraction for me either. I appreciated how Natalie responded to the trauma as an adult, how her self destructive tendencies informed so much of her character, and the stops and starts she consistently took in her steps toward being as whole as she possibly could be. Now knowing for certain she was the Antler Queen adds another layer I’m sad we won’t really get to explore in adulthood. To see the team members pass her death off as an overdose to save their own skin really upset me, especially Lottie and her whole wellness center. Reading this made me even more upset and I’m really glad they didn’t go with this version of the scene:

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t...juliette-lewis-exit-interview-1235501213/amp/

“In her final scene, she ends with this deep breath. Sophie said you filmed an alternate take with her young Nat and Javi (Luciano Leroux) laughing at her. Can you tell me why you went with the final shot and what you wanted to leave us on with Nat?

There was this concept we were experimenting with, which was all of Natalie’s guilt, all of her shame kind of coming at her from every ghost, including her younger self. Mocking her. Laughing at her. But I have to say, when we saw it in the cut, it felt kind of gratuitous and cruel. It didn’t feel organic, ultimately. We were really trying to get to something that had some emotional power and I think that’s almost more like a horror movie moment, to have Javi and young Natalie laughing at her. I think it was a good decision to pull back on that and make it a little more about the more somber version of that surreal moment.”

Tbh the other version of that scene sounds cool. The version we got seems a bit sanitized after knowing the original idea:shrug: I guess different strokes

Hope she stays gone. Also, did I miss her being the antler queen? I saw they named her leader but did they show anything yet outright showing her as that?

Over the 2 seasons, it seems obvious that Shauna is the main character. Even though her adult plot line kinda got bad.

I think the biggest issue is they are still leaving “the wilderness” too vague. This far in I feel like we need some more definitive answers.

I'm pretty confident anointing her the queen was the drop of her being "antler queen"

I wouldn’t be surprised if the next “twist” is surprise, she’s not the Antler Queen!

I’m not sure she’s the queen. I think the role will probably rotate considering they’ll be doing the card game more often without a shelter and continue to offer leadership to those who the wilderness “protects”.

I sure hope not. The entire point of this reveal, twist, is to imply that Natalie is THE leader. If we find out she's not then lol I mean, wtf

Id like to believe the show isn't that bad

It’s definitely setting up some complicated dynamics. Shauna clearly wants that leadership role in the 90s timeline and I think that’s going to cause some friction down the line. Perhaps Natalie is the original Antler Queen for a time, but then the group splits and someone else takes over. Or maybe not. Maybe Natalie’s spiral after being rescued is largely due in part to her role she played in the wilderness and the darkness she grew to accept out there. We’ll see. I do think Coach Ben is in genuine danger now because it was pretty heavily implied he was the culprit of the fire. Javi was about to take Natalie out to the cave so she’ll probably know to start hunting in that general direction for Coach Ben and also shelter. I’m assuming the cave is where they’ll end up staying.

There are some smaller things I was bothered by this season. Namely, the resolution to Mari hearing a drip the entire run of the season being an apparently shared delusion/vision with Tai where she sees blood running down the walls? Like that was really it? If so, why did Tai hear it too? Was it just the hunger making both of them crazy? Why did her starvation manifest in hearing an endless drip and why did it turn out to be blood running down the walls? There is a theory out there that Mari was having future visions from the wilderness when her blood drips out of her as Pit Girl, but that’s a reach; especially when we still don’t know if there actually even is anything out there or if it is, like Shauna said, just them. Like clearly there’s SOMETHING that happened out there prior to their time there, right? There’s a creepy ass symbol everywhere that creates a giant map that also makes the symbol, and Tai is seeing the man with no eyes wandering around leading her to the locations of those symbols carved on trees, and when Jackie died she had a vision of the former resident of the cabin welcoming her to her death. I know they need to keep it going to make it to five seasons, but I do feel like I know just about as much as I did by the end of season one and I don’t know how to feel about that. Conflicted I guess?

I’m pretty disappointed with how this wrapped up.

I know that Lewis didn’t want to be part of the series anymore but there is really no one to root for in the wilderness timeline now. Anything that Nat does in that timeline is basically pointless now.

A lot of this felt very much like Dexter type writing.

I do also think there’s some interesting stuff going on here with generational trauma and how it’s passed on. It doesn’t feel coincidental that Shauna’s daughter and Lisa, Natalie’s kindred spirit she sees as a sort of younger version of herself, are both present for the Yellowjackets’ ritual. Tai also has her own son she’s already begun to traumatize. The look on Shauna’s face when she’s watching her daughter as the ambulance is taking Lottie, Kevin and Natalie away said a lot about her growing concern. Lisa was at the compound to find an escape and healing after her own experiences at home and now this woman who saw herself in Lisa has sacrificed herself to save her and that’s not an event you just blink away. Curious to see if they continue expanding on these ideas.

And poor Kevin by the way. It’s becoming very clear what a danger they all are to the innocent. Adam Martin was just a dude with seemingly no ulterior motive, Kevin was a good detective just trying to do his job who also genuinely cared about Natalie, the reporter Misty killed was just trying to do the job Tai had paid her to do, Shauna and Tai’s families are actively being destroyed by their actions, etc.

Idk maybe people need to stop framing their expectations around "reveals" and "twists" ... sometimes a natural progression of plot functions better than one that pulls the rug under from the viewer. to me it seems like the characters are being set up to worship "the wilderness" over people, returning them all to that primal / pack-dog mentality of whoever's "strongest" is alpha, and their collective / individual humanity means nothing while they're constantly at risk of eating one another.
