self-titled was mostly a throwaway album for me, it had some new songs, lotta reworked old songs, and yah despite a couple tracks i don't go back to that album at all. i thought it was a weak send off. it felt like a compilation of old stuff rather than a whole new album.

It’s my third favorite after Paper Walls and Southern Air.

Other than Empty Street, what were the “reworked older songs?”

I didn’t realize Empty Street was a reworked song. Do you know which album it was intended for? My ear says Lights and Sounds.

Interesting take, not your cup of tea. I come back to it often. They are all great songs, especially Rest in Peace, What Appears, Got Yours, The Hurt is Gone, and Fields & Fences is just beautiful. For me, as a fan of the Big If era...I was super extra happy with Empty Street getting an official complete version on the album. In fact, with an inevitable new YC album coming...I'm hoping we get one more Big If song aka Triple Please.

  10. That's the only one. Judging by that random merit, the other user should dismiss When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes and Southern Air as well... if they were consistent with that take.

The seventh track "Empty Street" was originally recorded as a Big If (ex bassist Sean O'Donell and Key's former side project) demo in 2009. The eighth track "I'm a Wrecking Ball" was a demo originally recorded in 2008 by Key, guitarist Ryan Mendez and Dan McLintock of Inspection 12

I love that song, but Sean O'Donell already did an official recorded version that's on his own album 'Spirit Junkie' released in 2014 under his own name. Great album btw. Monster is also on the album. Bunny and Me on Spirit Junkie doesn't rock out at the end though.

I loved Bunny and Me. I did like Seans take on it, but i thought Big Ifs was far better when the song kicks in 1/2 way into it.

I totally forgot about this! But I agree with Brian, I like the Big If version better - it would sound huge with YC production.

Oh yess, I'll fill you in!
During YC's hiatus (2008-2010), Ryan Key and Sean O'Donell made a nice chunk of songs together.
They called themselves 'Big If'. Ryan Mendez engineered these songs that were basically them on guitars and vocals while the drums were programmed. The songs were uploaded on the Big If Myspace page and then ripped on Youtube. YC came back to life and Big If never officially happened. However, Big If songs did make their way into all YC albums except Lift a Sail.
On WYTTSY we got Hang You Up and Hide which was originally a slow song in its Big If form.
On Southern Air has the opener Awakening which is a very reworked Big If song called Bug Light.
On the Self Titled we got Empty Streets which is basically a perfected from its Big If form.

Sean O'Donell reworked two Big If songs on his own album in 2014 being Monster & Bunny and Me.

If memory serves me right, theres still a good chunk of Bif If songs left to be reworked or forever abandoned:
Triple Please, When, Red Carpets, You Went Gold, and Always Almost.
All these songs I've mentioned exist as old bad quality ripped audio quality on Youtube.

I always looked forward to the re-worked versions of all of these Big If songs after listening to the crappy-quality demos for so long. Especially Hide, to this day it's still my fave from WYTTSY.

I'm always pumped for new YC...even working on a cool OA 20th Anniversary project that I think the band themselves are gonna dig. But I would love to hear some good old double-time beats and wild fills in their music again. I still loved their last couple of records with Nate on drums, though.

How awesome is it to be getting new music on the 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue? I want a special repress!

My wife and I borrowed the lyrics "the two of us, we dream like one" from Inside Out and used them for our wedding theme.
