Dismissing racism and misogyny with no context other than to be offensive is weird, especially considering the context of this thread. "Satire" specifically targets and mocks those that are punching down for a laugh. They made no statement against the misogynoir or the anti-Asian racist jokes they made within the context of their "jokes". Literally all they did was make fun of asian and black women. They used a platform to spew racist "jokes" with what they thought, would be no repercussions like joe rogan. And this isn't his first offense. Time and time again he's been called out for this type of "humor" with no context other than to offend and not only doubled but quadrupled down with "if you're offended sorry, but you're too sensitive. I can say and do what I want because you don't know me." Which is bullshit for a cis-white man with a platform as big as his, accompanied by the fact that he's done 0 on a personal level to help the communities he's disparaging and making "satirical:" jokes about. It's literally been YEARS of bs and specifically poc calling him out repeatedly for continuation to degrade woman and poc over and over and over. He's a known, proud and open edgelord and asshole who doesn't care who he offends because "it's just jokes". It doesn't matter if his music is "good", he's proven ten times over to be an objectively awful person.

comments like this really make me wonder if I’m missing something here because no he hasn’t and that’s not what objectively means. the worst shit he’s done is make some dumb, offensive comments, if that’s all it takes to be an objectively awful person I guess toss me on that list as well

 

I do think Matt Healy is not worth the attention he gets for any of this shit but I also do hope you aren't putting yourself on the same list for co-signing on putting on various ethnic accents for comedy, I get that this site likes his music and lyrics but he is a dick at the end of the day. And honestly that's all that needs to be said, no reason to give him any more attention on whatever various dumb shit he does.

Attempting to separate his “Nazi salute” from the lyrics it lines up with in the song is absolutely batshit dumb. He isn’t glorifying it. He is condemning it.

 

A grown man who pulls their eyes back while making SA jokes about asian and black women and then doubles down on them, is an objectively bad person. A person who thinks making others feel unsafe is funny is an objectively bad person. Consider you're debating that instead of reconsidering why you think it's okay to do that and call it satire?*

 

He constantly does hateful things but everyone who notices and calls it out is “batshit dumb”, okay. Very nice. Then why does he constantly apologize for his behavior? I didn’t know this band had such a cult following. “He was just making a joke when mimicking a genocidal fascist because he quoted the bad people when he did it and therefore it’s actually good”. The guy said the R word and then in his apology used it again. Beyond all the racist stuff, there’s the misogyny. There’s just so much crap about this guy out there. A month ago the guy himself apologized to ice spice and admitted he is an asshole and talked about how he’s really trying to change. Let him do that then. Making excuses for him is only upsetting people who are offended by his past behavior.

 

Idk if there's anything to really debate here, seems like there are plenty of valid reasons to not fuck with Matty while also recognizing that the salute was clearly not a literal gesture. It's still pretty dumb optics-wise, but the context there is obvious and important. That doesn't mean he hasn't said a lot of other terribly stupid and offensive shit, and if that makes you not want to listen to his band, I think that's completely valid

 

Not sure how he’s never been called out for lyrics in songs like “Girls” when it’s basically a sequel song to Christine Sixteen. Paul Stanley probably loves it. Creeps.

 

I really hope he does. It wasn't anything the 1975 necessarily did that put me off the band, it was just him. Walking lead singer syndrome. Get your shit together.
