Let's be honest: nobody knows fucking anything about when Speak Now TV is coming out.

Stop bringing up Adele pressing too many albums. It's not a real issue. TS sold 1 million damn units last year of the same medium

Adele's album was just not very good.

Exactly. Adele's team fumbled it and misjudged how much of her audience wanted her album on vinyl, and it screwed up the entire process for quite a while. Her release caused a lot of trouble for other artists. Even if 30 was as big as 21 was, doesn't mean she would've sold the requisite number of copies on vinyl. At least Taylor's team knew they could push the albums properly. Seeing all that Adele vinyl @ Goodwill knowing what that did to the vinyl industry in 2021 still upsets me. (I also saw some Midnights copies floating around there too, but nowhere near the level of 30's).

Taylor Swift albums accounted for 1 in 25 vinyl LPs sold in 2022. That's a lot. I have no problem with it as long as the artist can push the albums.

You're right that it isn't either artist's fault. It's the music industry that's screwing it up here. I found an interesting substack article from January that explains the music industry's continued fumble with vinyl production. Might share in the vinyl thread as well.

Did the Music Business Just Kill the Vinyl Revival?

Kind of annoys me when people just dunk on Adele as the scapegoat for the vinyl production problems. The whole ecosystem was fucked long before that, and it's the major labels and their refusal to invest in expanding the capacity that is causing (and prolonging) the problem. 30 is a perfectly decent album that didn't have the momentum of its two predecessors and still sold more vinyl than anything else from 2021, including two Taylor's Version releases. Adele just doesn't have the same kind of rabid fanbase as Taylor, which means the variant strategy (even if they'd tried it) wouldn't have worked the same way. Frankly, I think baiting your fans into buying four copies of your album is worse than what Adele and her camp did, but I also think the "collect all the variants" fad in record collecting is fucking stupid, so what do I know!

Yeah, I was confused by some of the comments because I remember reading that 30 opened huge sales wise in the US at least and ended up being the highest selling album of that year.

Agree with your points here. The article I posted made the same point you did about the labels refusing to invest in manufacturing. Side note: the price-gouging from the labels on new releases AND re-releases is awful and shouldn't be the norm. Can't believe how much I've paid for some standard (not even 180g) releases.

Yes, Taylor's ploy with the variants and the clock thing was stupid, even if the albums did sell.

I used to be a "2-3 variants" collector and one album I got every variant of last album of a band we don't discuss and I'm still trying to offload those. Learned my lesson.

These days, the only albums I get multiples of are ones I know I'll wear out from heavy use (which are seldom few). I see some people's collections (of Thrice's discography for instance), and it blows my mind adding it all up. My spouse already doesn't like my hobby, but I had the self-awareness to tone it down and be more selective about what I buy.

With all of that said, I own a copy of 30 on vinyl LOL.

Re: variant collecting, I just can’t see getting to a point where I wouldn’t prefer to buy a copy of an album I don't own yet rather than purchasing multiple variants of one album. Even if we're talking my favorite albums of all time!

My current biggest complaint of Lover is that The Chicks aren't featured prominently enough. Hope they get a feature on self titled or speak now

I think of this every time I’m listening to it, but it’s insane that Better Man didn’t make the original Red. What a song. So glad it made the re-recordings.

Speak Now plus deluxe, if you count both acoustic cuts and one pop mix, is 20 tracks. So my guess is the other two are the Hunger Games tracks, but maybe not
