well im not the one who actually said ripped off ;-p but thats just a more aggaressive way of saying he took a lot of influence from cursive which i think he undeniably did. he still put the max bemis spin on it.

I'll have to give another spin to older Cursive. Perhaps Ugly Organ was more of a departure/specific album concept than im.giving it credit for

songs like "Belt" and "Spidersong" and fucking "Chia Like, I Shall Grow" have Cursive and Gatsbys written all over them. its obvious.

Also Admit It is like a half assed version of The Dismemberment Plans "Back and Forth" only Admit It is now really dated

I mean, just because the song structure is erratic and he avoids overuse of power chords does not mean he's ripping off those other bands. Loads of punk/semi-punk musicians like to stray from pop song structures at times to mix it up.

There were only a few bands in the pop punk scene who did it but that doesn't mean they are directly related

there was a time where i thought it was the most badass, righteous thing i ever heard. now i hear it and think of the simpsons "Old Man yells at Cloud" thing

Well no, that's just me reading into it a bit more because that's really as far as the similarities between Cursive, Gatsbys and IARB go.

so youre implying im not reading into it enough?

randall's just saying thats as far as the comparison goes for him and its not enough, for him, to call it a rip off. at least i think thats what hes getting at

dont know if id use the words rip off in either case either but influence, pretty heavy above average influence, is definitely there

although i do know the first time i heard domestica and ugly organ i was like "ah so this is where max bemis drew his inspiration from early on." kind of like the first time i heard built to spill and was like "okay so this is what manchester orchestra wanted to be when they started out"

Idk, I just think it's reactionary. Everyone at the time was being boring and just playing power chords and octaves 90% of the time, a few bands branched off of that (would include Early November and obviously Brand New in that) and their side-experimenting within the genre manifested in different ways. I think those bands branching out and creating those hybrid genre sounds did so independent of each other because they thought their music had more to offer than what was "safe" or "trendy", and would have done the same individually if the other bands didn't exist

TMTMTP is another great concept album, speaking of TEN

Built to spill revealed worlds of influence to me. Like the missing puzzle piece in the jigsaw puzzle, key to the safe. I realized I owe a solid one-third of my music taste to them

i think a lot of those bands saw what the other bands who were branching out were doing and took inspiration from each other you know? like its not unheard of to me that max might've heard ribbons and sugar in 2003 while writing iarb and thought "wow this is fucking cool"

Always a soft spot in my heart for that band. TMTMTP, I mean concept albums are hard, it's not perfect, but damn they really created a compelling message at the end of it all. Gave me some EXTREMELY relevant perspective when I was a high school senior and my parents were splitting because of my dad's PTSD getting really bad after he retired from the Navy. Find that album's lyrics have a lot of parallels to what I was going through at the time.
